Broadway's Top 10 for 2001

"The Producers": It's easy to pick Mel Brooks' deserved blockbuster of a musical comedy as best show, much harder to find 10 good ones in a weak theater year.

Call me a snob, but I'm avoiding all plays in which the best seats are saved for those willing to pay $480 per seat. In this time when so many people are out of work and are grieving, I find it outrageous how they could charge so much. But maybe I'm alone in this. Who knows.

I lucked out. After 9/11, there were a lot of tourists afraid to come to NYC, so I got great front orchestra center seats at cost. The show was great.

Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane are leaving the Producers after the March 17 show. Alas.
