Hartford, Conn. (WTNH) - As many as 11,000 people may be affected by the theft of personal information from the state Office of Policy and Management.

OPM says they learned Friday that the Hartford Police Department was investigating the ID theft.

Those at risk are those who applied for the furnace rebate program which ran from August 2008 to March 10, 2010. The program provided rebates of up to $500 to individuals who replaced their furnace or boiler with higher efficiency models.

OPM says they don't have an exact number of those affected, but it may be "as few as 1 or as many as 11,000."

Gov. Jodi Rell has ordered OPM to hire a identity theft protection agency for all affected individuals. OPM says they will be contacting each individual affected as soon as possible.

Police believe the suspect was not an OPM employee, but rather a temporary worker.
