The original Midway airlines...
I was on the first Midway flight from MDW to DTW. They advertised penny on the dollar fares for the first day. They did not expect the response - thousands of people crammed into Midway airport waiting to buy tickets. Some who slept overnight in the terminal were very upset to have the lines form around them and were making a scene for the TV cameras. While this commotion was going on, I snuck to the front of the line and just then the ticket agents arrived to begin selling tickets. I got the first 4 to DTW for (if I remember correctly) 34 cents each. No round trip tickets - same issue on the return. But in DTW, there was no advertising so they had plenty of seats available. Did not leave the airport in DTW, just had lunch and walked around with the family. It was a great day, and very exciting.

Allow me to be the first and perhaps only one to list
Sterling Airlines
They started flying 12/95 from Long Beach to ORD. By 2/96 (I think) they were gone. In compensation for my outbound flight being cancelled and being rerouted much later in the day on another airline, I was give a free round trip voucher. So were 100s of other people.
Everything they had was leased/chartered/sub-contracted. Except for the president and one or two other employees.

Aside from the above, almost all of which I remember, let's remember:
Altair - also early 80's with routes such as EWR-RIC
Christman Air - One trip from PIT to CAK in late 70's
Princeton Airlines - PCT-EWR-PCT 8 times a day - died about 1983
Air Florida - died from having that crash on the Potomac mid 80's

Southern (nobody remembers these guys, Airliners.net doesn't even have a photo for them. They had some pretty snazzy DC-9's though)
Not so anrkitec-
Some do remember those Southern DC-9's being turned around in places like Albany, Ga. in less than 10 minutes. We know, we timed it after seeing it the first time.
