Eastern
TWA
Western Pacific
People Express
Sabena
SwissAir [sort-of]
Allegheny/PSA/Piedmont [now all part of the USAirways/USAirways Express family]

Note to OB One: The current PanAm merely purchased the name & trademark from the original. While the WWW site proclaims its 'corporate heritage' to the original PanAm, this is at best a tenuous linkage.

PanAm is still alive. I think its HQ is in Portsmouth NH. They run a couple of flights out of Portsmouth and one flight a day from ORH (Worcester, MA) to Sanford (outside MCO) FL. Used to be direct, ORH to Sanford, not a bad alternative to MCO, now they stop in Allentown PA to pick up anyone there who cares to visit Mickey. Eventually, the ORH flight finds its way to SJU (nah probably the local airport in San Juan, I forget the name)

The guy that runs this airline bought the rights to the name Pan Am from the bankruptcy trustee, so I don't think you can really consider "Pan Am" still alive when the only thing the two airlines have in common is a name and a livery.

Lone Star Airlines

There are probably a few more that I don't remember from one I was young (I think Eastern is probably one of these).

I remember the Ionosphere club! As a kid I flew Eastern with my dad and got to go to the club. I also remember a trip to Florida (Miami, not Orlando though) that he took me on as a surprise one cold Cleveland winter. when he died, i kept the membership for a year because it was painful to let go. I probably still have a membership card around someplace.

no one has mentioned valuejet? maybe we don't want to remember them.

Amen. The real PanAm died a long time ago. The fact that the name and logo are used by some cut-rate outfit is an insult to the memory of Juan Trippe and the people who opened up much of the world to air travel...

North Central

Eastern
Air Panama
Prinair (remember those colorful Herons?)
Western
Texas International

As a child my dad I flew an outfit that I think was called Chicago Helicopter Airlines that ran from O'Hare to Midway to Meigs & back to O'Hare. My first & only time on a helicopter, all I remember is thinking it was very noisy.

What a great topic. I'm going to go through my childhood travel logs at home tonight (thanks, dad, I've never appreciated enough the fact that you did that for me) and see if I missed any!

TWA (my first flight -- STL TUS at age 2. No, I don't remember it.)
Eastern (now only AA has silver planes)
Midway (the one based at MDW, with the weird triangle thingys on the tail)
Air Ontario (or is it still around?)
Piedmont (um, make up your own Piedmont comment here.)

BTW: On one flight, we asked "What's a Piedmont?" The FAs knew! And explained at length, IIRC.

Nobody mentioned Chicago & Southern (C & S).
Flew them MSY - KIN once. They merged with Delta to become Delta C & S for a while.

Thanks for the replies on PanAm. I know that it is not the same airline it once was but is owned by one guy using secondary airports with little service. The daily ORH flight flys over my house every night at 11:50 pm. I haven't been too tempted to hop on.

Northeast(ern?) was taken over by Delta, running those yellowbirds to FL.
