Using two different FF accounts for connecting flight with different airlines?
Hi there,
Think this is probably the best place to post this message, apologies if not. I've searched around for an answer and not found anything. Think it's a simple answer for those of you in the know!
I'm about to book a connecting flight on Opodo which goes AMM-KWI on RJ and then connects to KWI-CMB on UL.
For the RJ flight I want to credit the miles to my AAdvantage account and for the UL flight credit them to my Etihad Guest account. Is this possible?
If so which FF number do I give when I'm booking the flight online? How do I then give my other one? When I'm checking-in in AMM can I give them both? (As I won't need to check in again in KWI I won't be able to do it there before the UL flight.) Or should I give neither and then I'll have to claim the miles manually after flying? (I'd rather not do that, prefer it all to be automatic, but if that's the only way then I guess that's life!)

To the OP: What you put in when you book the tickets really doesn't matter - all it does is pre-populate each of the segments with that FF number. So, use the number that you want on the most segments, or if it's even, the first one. Then, on segments where you want to credit to another FF number, tell the agent at the time of check-in what you want to do. As long as the agent changes the FF number for that segment, you should get credit for that segment the way you want it. Ideally, you'd do this before the boarding pass is printed so that the desired FF number is on the boarding pass (for airlines that print the FF number on the boarding pass) in order to make it easier should that segment not post correctly.

As previous posts suggest, there is no general rule that segments of a trip have to be credited to the same program. Each flight usually stands alone. (I've worded this to allow for a possible exception someplace, but in over two decades of heavy travel with many airlines I've never seen one.)
However, I'm not sure about the "first one" bit. It's not a big deal, but consider where you'll check in with an agent versus using a boarding pass you got earlier. It's easier to change the number for a segment where you check in in person. So, if you'll get boarding passes for two flights when you first check in - I don't know if that will happen in your situation - it would be best to pre-enter the number of the second flight. Then, when you check in for the first at AMM, the RJ agent can change your FF number for that flight to AA and leave the Etihad number on the second flight (harder for him/her to change, perhaps not possible) alone.
(If you'll have to check in for both flights in person, this isn't a consideration, but even if it doesn't affect you it could matter to others reading this thread.)

I'm planning to do a lot of this switching around with some upcoming AF itineraries. I usually go for DL SM these days, but a lot of my segments (on flights that aren't even that cheap) have L and N fare codes that don't earn SM. For those segments, I'm going to try to opt for a different ST program, hopefully getting at least 25% mileage. I'll report back on how much of a pain it is to change the numbers at the airport.

Hi there, thanks very much for your replies. I'm hoping I'll get both boarding cards in AMM so as you suggest Efrem I'll put the Etihad number in when booking and then get the RJ agent to change to the AA number for the first leg. It'd be good to hear back from HLS2002 to see if he encounters any problems, and I'll do the same! Cheers all, happy travelling.
