Wasted Miles?

Hello everyone, I’m new to the board. I’m an American living in Auckland, New Zealand. If anybody can answer the following questions, I’d really appreciate it.

1)I have 12,000 UA Miles and my partner has 9,000. We haven’t earned any new miles in the past almost 36 months so I assume these will be expiring. I realize we can transfer miles between the accounts at a rate of 0.01 and a $25 fee. I think that 0.01 rate is good until the end of March. Since United no longer fly’s out of Auckland, I wonder if it’s worth it to transfer the miles or just let them go.

2)If I transfer the 9,000 miles from my partners account to mine, is that considered “earned” miles, giving me another 36 months before they expire?

3)When United used to fly to and from NZ, a round trip reward to America was 60,000 miles. That same flight on Air New Zealand would cost me 100,000 Airpoints, can I use 60,000 MP Miles to book the award on Air New Zealand?

4) Lastly, can I earn Mileage Plus miles on Air New Zealand flights?

didnt know you could do the transfer thing with UAL miles but I do know that ANY activity is considered activity. I once had miles deducted for buying magazines online thru some airline gig and this counted as well. So do any mileage plus mall transactions, so buy some printer ink for your old boss back in the states and have it shipped directly to him thru the use of your credit card now online. If you left any addresses of your particulars in the states, some transactions may be easier to facilitate on line, but either way, this should work.

Tell you what you could do:

Go online, find the phone number of ANY United Dining for miles restaurant, call it, and charge up a gift certificate that you tell them you want mailed to your mother or brother back in the states, or something.

Does not matter the amount but once they charge your card--and they need not know where you are calling from, except that you are not there to come collect the cert yourself--then you will earn miles from the dining for miles program.

The cert will get mailed to mom --or in some cases, places leave them at the front desk for patrons to pick up--and you will get miles 6-8 weeks later, which will keep those accounts alive another 3 years!

do it.
and yes, NZ flights should count as UAL miles as I think they are a star aliance member...

hope these things help. My friend who has about the same miles on his UAL and other airlines is just now debating what to do with them all. Bring them up to award levels and use em! At least bring them up to even 5,000 marks. An example of why this is good is NWA miles that can be used in chunks of 5000 to get free tickets on Hawaiian air. Surely United has similar offers with partners. Some airlines have miles+ money offers as well.

Welcome to Flyertalk....

We have a few members from New Zealand, so you may get to meet them...

You may want to post this in the United Forum... it is further down the list. There is where the true experts lurk... and they are fantastic people.

Welcome again.

For future reference it is bad form to post the same thing in multiple forums. You have posted this here, in NZ forum and UA.

See the new users guide for more helpful tips and terms of service.

Welcome to flyertalk Amerigo.

Becuase you have posted this in multiple forums, I'm going to close this here, as the MilesBuzz forum is for the posting of the latest "frequent flyer program buzz". Any program specific questions should be posted in that programs forum.

Regards,
