Typically if you match the second half of the year it is good all of the following year and until February of the year after. It should also say in your account when it is valid until.

Does the match on CO come with requirements like having to fly with them X number of flights within X number of days?

I'm currently NW gold and want to switch to CO gold. I know I'll have to go thru a 3rd airline and was planning to use US since my work forces me to fly them several times per year. Now I read that US isn't matching anymore? And UA and AA, which I never fly, are only doing challenges? Are there any other airlines that I could use for this switch?

It sounds like UA has gotten rid of straight up status matches in favor of challenges. However, do they still do a straight match for AA? I ask this because AA has a challenge-only policy, with the exception of UA, where they will grant a match as far up as Plt (for 1P or 1K). Also, what exactly are the terms of the UA challenge?

Nope, since it's not a published fast track. Yep, no fees as of late for doing it, assuming you have the status on another airline so they are willing to give you a fast track.

I have AA Gold thru the challenge will i be able to use that to get status to CO anyways?
Also have SAS Silver, but haven't flown on neither really this year.
Fly CO mostly, but credited everything to Delta, but would have received a lot more points if i had used CO program, so want to start next year with 50% if possible

P.S. from the spelling/grammar police: there's no such word as "anyways," though admittedly lots of people use it in casual speech.

We are currently Silver Preferred on USAirways (and will be next year as well). We are moving in the spring and want to switch to United. I just want to clarify that I understand things that I have read in this thread..
I need to email United regarding doing a challenge. We will need to fly 6,250 miles on United within 90 days. We will have premiere status on United while doing the challenge. Is this all correct? What happens if we fly enough miles to qualify for the next level during the challenge (I think it would be 12,500)? Would we get upgraded to the next level or would we still have the Silver Preferred equivalent level?
How long does it usually take United to give you the status? We will be doing two round trips between PIT and SEA in Feb and March, which will be more than enough miles. I don't want to do it to early and miss the deadline to earn miles, but I don't want to wait to long either.
Neither my husband or I have United accounts now. Should we open these before asking for the challenge? All flying we have done on United in the past we have just earned USAirways miles for.
Thanks for the help!

I think it may be difficult to match US Airways Silver to United given that they are both partner carriers in the Star Alliance. Basically they don't want to "steal" customers from each other. But you may be able to convince them, not sure.
Now, provided you are able to get it, your Mileage Plus accounts (which you and your husband must sign up for and include the account numbers in the email) will immediately get upgraded to the new status and remain for 90 days. You need to fly 6250 miles within that period to keep the Premier status beyond the initial 90 days "challenge" period. And if they upgrade you to Premier (which is the likeliest from the lowest-level tier of another airline, e.g Silver), I doubt you'll be able to go to the next level (Premier Executive) by completeing 12,500 miles because you simply would not be signed up for that challenge. If you can convince them to match you and sign you up for their Premier Executive challenge, then that's a different story.
Hope this helps and Good Luck!
