Texas get together

Hey, we have all these FlyerTalk meetings in New York, Boston, and Long Beach. How about one in TX? I am sure there are enough Texans or frequent travelers to TX on FlyerTalk. AUS, DFW, IAH, SAT-- take your pick.

BTW, AUS will be opening its new airport on 02 MAY 99- Austin Bergstrom International.

Well, Podnah, Count Ol' JAWs in as the original "Texas Ranger". I am sure all us Texans would attend, and after that, we would have to be selective as to whose passport we permit to cross our border. We can pick a date when The Astrodome or Texas Stadium is available, cook up some of our GREAT BAR-B-QUE, and just have good ol' time.

As JAWs always says, "This will be one of the best things to happen with your boots on".

Beckles Apr 7, 1999 10:00 am

JAWS ... I thought you Texans did *everything* with your boots on anyway ...

AlphaSigOU Apr 7, 1999 10:37 am

Sounds like a winnah to me... keep me posted on plans.

An all-night pub-crawl on the Riverwalk in San Antone is do-able -- and most of the major hotels (with frequent stay clubs) such as Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott are right on the Riverwalk.

The Astrodome and/or Texas Stadium or the Bawl-park in Arlington sounds like a good idea too! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

PremEx Apr 7, 1999 11:58 am

San Antonio! Yeah!

JAWS_II Apr 7, 1999 12:32 pm

SAT is a good place. We could also do some "crawling" around El Mercado, too. Of course, with our boots on.

Beckles, you can just about put "everything" in that category. We haven't tried swimming, yet!

Catman Apr 7, 1999 1:46 pm

Honorable, noble best buddy JAWS...

Would you wonderful Texans mind if a friendly and good natured Cat loving man from JERZEE join your party?

I would probably need a passport -- but I'm in good with the Texas Rangers so that should be easy.

Weekends best... that was if I'm in no condition to come home sunday night I have sick days to use! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And San Antonio gets FOUR PAWS up! Maybe your native Texas can show me the real hot spots to go to. I haven't spent more than a few hours later.

OMNI: ONCE I DID go Swimming with my boots on. My dingo boots with my Tan Stetson (which I'll wear to the Texas gathering!)

And my Hawaiian shirt! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Hammertoad Apr 7, 1999 2:01 pm

Dang. Dallas Alley or Riverwalk. Tough choice!

As a true American (Texan only by the grace of God), I would certainly relish the opportunity to go stompin'. SAT gets my vote.

PS - Any Dallasians with Cowboy tix they won't be using on Turkey day - please let me know as I kind of promised my dad I'd take him to the game this year.

Cheers,

'toad

JAWS_II Apr 7, 1999 2:38 pm

'toadman--born & raised, I hope. If so, I know you cannot wait to get back.

'catman--I will not tolerate another post about how you don't drink anything but Pepsi. No true gentleman with his Stetson and boots on would go swimming without being full of firewater.

Catman Apr 7, 1999 2:57 pm

JAWS... I'll explain how I got my boots wet to your directly.

When are you folks planning this Party in paradise/48 states thing?

AusTXHiker Apr 7, 1999 4:52 pm

Hey, not bad, 6 people (AusTXHiker, Jaws, AlphaSigOU, PremEx,Hammertoad, and Catman,)on the first day of posting. So far, SAT seems to be the first choice with DAL coming in second. Let's wait to get a few more people in and then compare calendars!

C'mon now, TX is right smack in the middle of the US (well, south central), yall can sample our state's fine Southern hospitality.

Catman- you can come if you promise to have a taste of TX's finest Blue Bell ice cream.

kyklin Apr 7, 1999 5:02 pm

As a transplanted Texan (spent my teenage years in Sugarland, TX), I sure would like to see a gatherin' wherever it's happening!

AlphaSigOU Apr 7, 1999 6:00 pm

Noo Yawk Yankee by birth... Texan by the grace of God... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Unfortunately for San Antonio, none of the major airlines have a club. Continental has been talking about putting a President's Club in SAT this summer; I'll believe it when I see it!

Anyhow... one good thing SAT has that DFW doesn't is that the locals will throw a party at the drop of a hat. (We're getting ready for the annual Fiesta - the Riverwalk will be a zoo beginning next week and continuing for the next week and a half!)

jamiel Apr 7, 1999 6:09 pm

San Antonio works well for me--=haven't been in a couple of years. May or July will be better than June.

onefreeman Apr 7, 1999 7:17 pm

OK count us in too. My CA/AZ passport still work in Texas?

Mid-July is best for us (or is that us'n -- have got to find my Texan dikshunairy http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif)

newself Apr 7, 1999 9:22 pm

Please count me in for the TEXAS get together. Jaws, don't forget Papadeux's by the dome for great food! Houston in July is great, HOT & HUMID!

Beckles Apr 8, 1999 6:33 am

I think I could probably make the trip from N'Awlins for something ... San Antonio sounds good to me, though Dallas would be fine too ...

JAWS_II Apr 8, 1999 7:40 am

Looks like we're going to have to check the availability of the AlamoDome. There's nothing small in Texas, so the Mucho Grande Texas FT hoedown looks like it will require expanded quarters, and maybe even a couple of dozen riverboats for "Rollin on the River". Ahhh yessss, San Antonio, the home of Shiner Bock, and the finest Mexican and Tex-Mex food in the world.

Yes, OFM, it is us'n, and JAWs, the original "Texas Ranger", will arrange your smooth passage through the "Border Patrol", although I do STILL have some question about Catman. You have to promise NOT to bring any Suaro's, though.

And, newself, Pappadeaux's are everywhere in Texas, as is Pappasito's. We'll even arrange for some habanero's for you.

OHHH, I almost forgot, some of the very best margaritas in the world are available for anyone who thinks they are a Parrothead, or, for that matter, anyone. Margaritas can make one feo 'y loco. We could do some "shots" after the margaritas.

AlphaSigOU-I see you were not born here, but getting to Texas as "fast as you could" makes you as close to a native as possible.

Come on down, y'all!!!

OMNI: Some advice for the Yanks thinkin' on comin' down:

If you are from the northern states and planning on visiting or moving to Texas, there are a few things you should know that will help you adapt to the difference in lifestyles.

If you run your car into a ditch, don't panic. Four men in a four-wheel drive pickup truck with a 12 pack of beer and a tow chain will be along shortly. Don't try to help them, just stay out of their way. This is
what they live for.

Don't be surprised to find movie rentals and bait in the same store. Do not buy food at this store.

Remember: "Ya'll" is singular, "All ya'll" is plural, and "All y'all's" is plural possessive.

Get used to hearing "You ain't from around here, are ya?"

You may hear a Texan say "Ought!" to a dog or child. This is short for "Y'all oughta not do that!" and is the equivalent of saying "No!"

Don't be worried at not understanding what people are saying, they can't understand you either.

The first Texan expression to creep into a transplanted Northerner's vocabulary is the adjective "big 'ol," as in "big 'ol truck" or "big 'ol boy". Most Northerners begin their new Texas-influenced dialect this
way. All of them are in denial about it.

The proper pronunciation you learned in school is no longer proper.

Be advised that "He needed killin'" is a valid defense here.

If you hear a Texan exclaim "Hey, y'all, watch this," stay out of the way. These are likely to be the last words he'll ever say.

If there is the prediction of the slightest chance of even the smallest accumulation of snow, your presence is required at the local grocery store. It doesn't matter whether you need anything or not. You just have to go there.

When you come up on a person driving 15 mph down the middle of the road, remember that most folks learn to drive on a John Deere and that this is the proper speed and position for that vehicle.

Do not be surprised to find that 10 year olds own their own shotguns and are proficient marksmen. Or that their mammas taught them how to aim.

In Texas, we have found that the best way to grow a lush, green lawn is to pour gravel on it and call it a driveway.

If you do settle in Texas and bear children, don't think we will accept them as Texans. After all, if the cat had kittens in the
oven, we wouldn't call 'em biscuits.

DuhWane Apr 8, 1999 9:27 am

<raising hand>

I'll volunteer to be the official "translator" for all uze guyz from up north. Born and raised (and still living) in Houston, our "Texan" is much closer to that of San Antonio's. (Not like them duhamn Yankees up north in Dallas.)

Also, a little Tex-Mex will do wonders:

Uno mas Margarita, por favor!

crju Apr 8, 1999 9:39 am

I pick Austin, Houston, or Dallas. The party needs to be in a party city. SAN is way to slow.

Just my choice,

crju

JAWS_II Apr 8, 1999 9:42 am

Welp, it looks like 'toad is "fixin" to prepare y'alls minds so that the "Free" State of Texas ain't foreign.

Speakin' of "fixin", the 'toad left out the explanation of this very important word. So, "fixin" can be used as follows:

"I'm fixin to go to town." "The wagon is fixin to break down." The store is fixin to have a sale." "All Texans are fixin to welcome Flyertalkers to the Lone Star State." "Ma is fixin steak 'n aigs tonite." "We're havin tortillas an' all the fixins."

JAWS_II Apr 8, 1999 9:51 am

JAWs is with DuhWane on the unmentionable third largest city in Texas. The "only" drawback about SAT is that there will be NO 'weekend special' hotel rates, especially along the Riverwalk.

NJDavid Apr 8, 1999 10:20 am

Well, if y'all did plan it for a bigger hub city, I might be fixin ta check the weekend special airfaires for me and the missus.

QuantumLeap Apr 8, 1999 10:30 am

TexMex and Beer/Margaritas/Shots/Actually-Anything-With-Alchohol-Really! Sounds good. I think I could be persuaded to mosey on down from DEN http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif My weekends of 5/15 and 6/5 are taken. Other than that, May and June are free.
-Q-

JAWS_II Apr 8, 1999 12:44 pm

NJD--There is no "bugger" cities in Texas than Houston and San Antonio, in that order.
The 4th "buggest" is Austin and we cud all git in a mess of fixins there. Pickin' and a grinnin' an jist havin' a big time. Might even be able to rent a houseboat and cruise the ponds.

Although, weekend airfares are probably better for IAH or DFW.

Catman Apr 8, 1999 2:12 pm

I would be for AUSTIN too. That's a real party town.

The only bad dates for me are wknds of 5-20 and 6-26.

And if my bestest buddy JAWS would take me under his wing and show me the ways of Texas I may forfeit my New Jersey citizen and become a Texan.

MileCrazy Apr 8, 1999 4:52 pm

i'll let you all fight it out on the place & date, and i'll be there.

one thing i've noticed from the several meetings i've had with flyertalkers; we could meet in a ghost town in the desert, it would still be a great time. so any of the above cities will work, party-town or not.

flygirl Apr 8, 1999 5:13 pm

All ya'll jist be kerful with that thar Everclear!(The Oasis in Austin did me in one time a few years back.)

------------------
OOOOOh! Don't forget the Blue Bell ice cream!

[This message has been edited by flygirl (edited 04-08-99).]

auh2o Apr 8, 1999 5:26 pm

When picking a city, please make sure most airlines fly there. Many TX cities are not served by UA.

Thanks for the consideration.

JAWS_II Apr 8, 1999 8:23 pm

flygirl--If you had food at the Oasis, I guarantee you it was not the Everclear that did you in. However, if no food was involved, then 'Hail to the Oasis'--"Hail Yes!" for Everclear and the Oasis Margaritas.

JAWS_II Apr 8, 1999 8:32 pm

"GoldWater", Podnah, UA has a stable in the major Texas cities. Now, if you're concerned about Mineral Wells or Del Rio, we gotta problem, ain't nobody keepin their horses there. So, you can look forward to Houston, San Antonio, Austin or Dallas. Come to think of it, the beach on South Padre Island is nice and we could make some "raids" into Mexico (not good air connections, though).

Catman Apr 9, 1999 11:04 am

I have NOT been to South Padre Beach.

But can you earn Frequent FLyer miles in the border towns across the border?

Let me make it simple: pick a place, pick a time and I will show up in my Stetson and fine Hawaiian shirt (the one that got all the ladies attention in NAWLINS!!!)

Catman Apr 9, 1999 11:04 am

DOUBLE MESSAGE! PLEASE DELETE!

Leave it to Yaz to do some kitty editing! He wants to come too! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

flygirl Apr 9, 1999 11:37 am

JAWS_II, No food, just margs! So apparently you've quenched your thirst there too?!
(We're really glad to see such a community grow from FlyerTalk - happy traveling and keep FlyerTalking!)

------------------

JAWS_II Apr 10, 1999 9:21 pm

OK, AusTxHiker, it's your turn. Let's get together on this and decide. We need a brainstorming session, so e-mail me with any ideas or dates you have in mind. Anyone else that has any ideas please do the same.

It's real nice and HOTTTT in July!

AlphaSigOU Apr 11, 1999 9:56 am

Jaws and AusTXHiker... if SAT is the place for the get-together, lemme know by e-mail and I'll get some advance intel on some of the sights and sounds. Feel free to e-mail me.

Catman Apr 11, 1999 11:16 am

July would probably work for me but NOT THE FIRST WEEKEND WITH FOURTH OF JULY! I have work to earn time off for the Party in Paradise.

As I said: name a date and a place and i'll be there decked out in my Stetson and Hawaiian shirt.

flyguy Apr 11, 1999 12:47 pm

I vote for SAT or Austin. Will be free weekend of 8 May and whole week after that.

AlphaSigOU Apr 11, 1999 1:28 pm

Austin or Houston are my second and third choices if SAT gets nixed. Just need plenty of notice so I can squeeze in time off.
