OK, folks, I'm a votin' early and often for either SAT or AUS, maybe both. Any weekend is fine with JAWs. Traveltoomuch votes for 6/12 or 7/24 or 7/30 in SAT. TTM's second choice is Houston.

Hiker and ASO(oops, better say AlphaSig), y'all scout around, get some intelligence, and give some recs on SAT or AUS Hotels.

AlphaSigOU Apr 11, 1999 8:44 pm

OK, Jaws, I'll forgive you this time... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Here's some San Antonio intel, for those who've never visited the Alamo City, and for those who haven't been there in ages:

Over on the Riverwalk proper, you have the Marriott Rivercenter and Convention Center (one built right into Rivercenter Mall, the other across the street within walking distance of the Henry B. (what the locals call the Convention Center.) You also have the Hilton Palacio del Rio, and the Hyatt Regency San Antonio. There'a also an Adam's Mark hotel in the downtown area.

Within walking distance of the Riverwalk is Alamo Plaza containing the Shrine of Texas Liberty... the Alamo. Totally surrounded by downtown sprawl but then... Whatever you do, don't get too blasted drunk in the Riverwalk and pull an Ozzy Osbourne! (About 20 or so years ago Ozzy was playing a concert in San Antonio, got blitzed and got busted by San Antonio's finest watering the hallowed Alamo. The show went on but he was told to never come back... until about a few months ago when a clean-and-sober Ozzy played the Alamodome again.)

Back to the Riverwalk again... you've got practically every theme restaurant and nightclub known to mankind here... but you didn't come here for the Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood... there are quite a few institutions here that are quite (in)famous:

Where else can you have dinner in the Republic of Texas, get tried by a Kangaroo Court and were you expecting to see an execution at Dick's? -- the sign says you can't kill a man born to hang! And after a few Texas-size margaritas, you'll wind up howlin' at the moon! (And yes, those are the names of some of the restaurants there!)

More intel to come... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

AlphaSig, don't forget the historic Menger and it's cigar bar. And, Mi Tierra and it's "friendly bar" along with the club right down the block and upstairs. There may not be enough days in a weekend.......OH YESSSS!!

JAWs is swimming in the San Antonio River.

I like the sounds of this San Antonio place! Especially Jaw's cigar bar!

AusTXHiker Apr 12, 1999 6:26 am

Austin. By the time this get-together comes around, yall will be treated on your arrival with Austin's new airport. No less than the prez himself will be at the opening of the airport.

Hotels-- there is a Holiday Inn, Residence Inn, Courtyard, and Omni on the Interstate on the way to downtown. Downtown properties include the Marriott, Sheraton, Omni, DoubleTree, Hyatt, Ramada, Four Season's, and of course, The Driskill Hotel, an Austin landmark (few rooms are haunted so if you like ghosts, I would recommend this hotel).

Activities-- well, we have the entire 6th Street as the party place. There is also a comedy club called "Esther's Follies." The comedians WILL get some people from the audience to help them with their skits. There are some off-6th street places like Polly Esther's and Fado (quite an authentic Irish Pub with Irish bartenders and even the coat hangers under the bar). The state capitol will make a great tour (largest capitol in the US). If you're up for a little nature trip, there are hiking trails in the greenbelt and town lake. Lake Travis is also a 20-30 minute drive-- sailing, jet skiing, boating, swimming, picnics, etc. Fredericksburg, a German settlement is a 90-minute drive (yes, they still speak German) en route to Enchanted Rock, a granite formation for hiking and camping.

Restaurants-- yes, we have margaritas too. Cafe Serrano's has one of the best. For an excellent Mexican brunch, Las Manitas is my choice. American breakfast- Kerbey Lane Cafe or Magnolia Cafe (Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey hangout). If you're a health food nut, there's Mother's and West Lynn Cafe (I've seen Anne Richards here a few times). French: there is a small French restaurant off-6th street that is owned by a French family. Very good food. I can go on and on but those are some of the choices.

Everyone vote on a city and possible dates. My vote is Austin anytime in June or July (you don't want to be here in August, 90-100s).

onefreeman Apr 12, 1999 6:48 am

We vote (I'm casting Raeban's vote by proxy - careful or I'll do an LBJ and start heading for the cemetery for more names!):

SAT. 1st or 2nd weekend of June.

We can visit our lunatic friends who live there (dual purpose mission)...

Beckles Apr 12, 1999 7:25 am

First and last weekends in May and fourth of July are no good for me, any other time is fine ...

I'm not too picky about the city, though SAT sounds appealing.

AlphaSigOU Apr 12, 1999 7:47 am

How's this sound... since Austin and San Antonio are less than 100 miles apart, how 'bout one day in San Antonio and one day in Austin?

For those who want to rack up miles either on Delta or United, Delta has one of the shortest flights in their schedule: SAT-AUS (two flights daily). No connections, no fuss, no muss. It's only a 15-minute positioning flight for their SLC-SAT-AUS-SLC rotation, but what the hey!

AusTXHiker Apr 12, 1999 9:51 am

For UA flyers, you can get direct flights to SAT from DEN and ORD. For AUS, direct flights are available from SFO, DEN, ORD, and IAD.

Catman Apr 12, 1999 1:06 pm

Can you Texans handle two cities and two parties in two days??? I know we party hardy Jerzee boys can!

Just pick a date so I can arrange for someone to watch my "children" (who sadly cannot make the Texas Hoe-down! Or whatever you are calling it!)

All weekends but last in June and first in July are good for me.

And I will not be a designated driver (a designated walker, maybe!) I want to try these famous Margaritas Y'all talk about.

AlphaSigOU Apr 12, 1999 3:05 pm

Catman: Party hardy? In Texas?!? But of course! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Beckles Apr 12, 1999 6:26 pm

Let's pick a date already!

I respectfully put down the weekend of June 12-13 as a proposal in SAT.

Come on ... let's do it!

Beckles

PS ~ If anyone's pissed about my take charge attitude I'm going to blame it on the beyond count number of margaritas (and the one beer I had on the plane) I downed in the CRC in New Orleans before getting to the CRC here in Atlanta!

AlphaSigOU Apr 12, 1999 7:00 pm

Beckles: that weekend sounds fine to me in SAT... anybody else?

AlphaSigOU

PS: Beware of the "river water" served at the Republic of Texas... a potent potable that packs a wallop! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

traveltoomuch Apr 12, 1999 7:17 pm

June 12 would work for me!

JAWS_II Apr 12, 1999 9:00 pm

OK, Cowgirls and Cowpokes, it sounds like 6/12-13 in SAT is pretty good. Let's have a straw vote. Everyone that can make it e-mail our voice in SAT, AlphaSigOU. We can then decide on Hoedown Headquarters and make tracks for the barn.

AusTXHiker Apr 12, 1999 9:11 pm

I've marked my calendar: 12-13 JUN 1999, San Antonio, TX. AlphaSigOU, please update us on the number of confirmations you get.

PremEx Apr 12, 1999 9:54 pm

Well, unfortunatly the weekends of the 12th and 26th are no good for me. On top of that it looks like the Long Beach get together might end up on the weekends of June 5th, or the 18th!!!. SAT would be my vote, but it sounds like I may not be able to make it on the dates you are planning. I shall await the decision.

AlphaSigOU Apr 13, 1999 7:51 am

Well... guess I got drafted to be the host! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The Texas FlyerTalk get-together is 12-13 June in the Alamo City (SAT).

So far I have Jaws, Traveltoomuch and AusTXHiker confirmed for the weekend of 12-13 June. Anyone else I missed? Please e-mail me your confirmation.

AlphaSigOU

PremEx Apr 13, 1999 11:57 am

Well 'ya all have a great time! Sorry I can't be there that weekend http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

QuantumLeap Apr 13, 1999 12:18 pm

That weekend sounds good. I'm still looking for anything like a reasonable UA rate from DEN. It looks like it might be cheaper to fly into AUS then drive down. What sort of time table did folks have in mind?

-Q-

AnnaS Apr 13, 1999 3:18 pm

I won't be able to make it either but all ya'll have a great time, heah! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

(See 'toad, you've already taught this Northerner something! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif )

auh2o Apr 13, 1999 3:42 pm

I probably can't make it either.

Phish concert in Chicago. However, if I don't get selected in the mail order ticket lottery...

JAWS_II Apr 13, 1999 10:04 pm

Looks like we have 4 lonesome doves, so far.
I think Catman may try it, but who else out there? 5 people ain't a big enuff gatherin for Texas. Do we need an alternate weekend?
Beckles suggested the 6/12-13 weekend, maybe beginning late on 6/11? Where's Beckles confirmation?

Catman Apr 14, 1999 12:02 am

Texas party pumpahs... The 6-11 to 13th would be the best weekend for me since I'm tied up every other weekend in JUNE so PLEASE DON"T CHANGE IT!!!

I am still working on reservations and cat sitter. Will OFFICIALLY CONFIRM SHORTLY.
