The miles I could've had...

Do they also check names vs. numbers on promos, I just got a new cell phone from my father and the name on the account is his, but I gave them my FF number for a 5000 mile promo. Have my fingers crossed

Where you call from has no bearing on a promo that you are registering for. All that DL tracks is if you are eligible for the promo that you have signed up for.

In the summer of 2000 I flew to London after I was just divorced. My passport and ticket had to be in my new name (I went back to my maiden name) but my DL Skymiles account still had my married name. I wasn't even able to put my DL number on the ticket, when I got back I had to write a letter to DL and send in all my flight info to get credit for the flights.

On domestic flights I was able to use my Skymiles # with my old name, but not the international ones and this was way back in 2000.

I find it really offensive that airlines feel it so necessary to delve into and sometimes rip open the whole issue of marraige and names when someone is divorced or involved in other name-related annomolies.

My wife, with her chosen hyphenated last name, or my Asian friend hong Sik Kim who goes by an Americanized "harold" have both had numerous problems trying to prove they are who they say they are, but even beyond any concerns over security, the airlines still like to be as firm and pig headed as that O'Riley guy on Fox news! NO, we are not going to budge and understand you are different from the norm. We are not going to help you. Sorry. next!

I would pursue that divorce/name issue of yours to this day with DL relentlessley until they cave.

And they eventually will.

My Dad and I share a name, so swapping FF miles has been easy.

Even funnier, when TWA was folded into AAdvantage, his miles were put into my account!

Would it work if the Dad's FIRST name was the kid's MIDDLE name?

I think the original poster was refering to a mileage bonus awarded for purchasing a new cell phone.

I don't know about all airlines, but I have earned miles for partner bonuses that were not name matched.

I know a guy who puts his number on his kids and wifes tickets. I have seen him do it when they were flying together. It is on AA and he often gets the miles. He has never had a problem. I personally wouldn't do it. He does and no problems.
