Rookie question about upgrading...
Hi all,
First time on this site....
I've done a lot of long-haul flying over the years but I've never been part of any frequent flyer programme or anything....however I'm flying round-trip London to Atlanta this month, and wondered how does one go about getting a seat upgrade?? I have Amex Platinum card points, but Amex say its up to the airline as to whether I can use Amex points to upgrade.
Free would obviously be great, but I'm prepared to pay - what's the best way to get an upgrade to business class? I'm flying economy Air France & Delta (Delta being the longest leg: Paris to Atlanta).
Any advice?
Thanks...

Welcome to Flyertalk, HKW!
Upgrading international flights using requires a combination of points and a high enough "fare basis" (though there are exceptions).
To really answer your question, we'll probably need to know whether you are ticketed by Air France or Delta, and also the "fare basis" of your ticket (a combination of several letters, starting perhaps with Y, B, M, K, L, U, T, etc as the first letter). You can look on your ticket (if paper) or call the airline.
Then, depending on your answers, the best place to find out what to do next would be either the Air France forum or the Delta forum here on Flyertalk.
Drop me an email (gleff -at- yahoo.com) and let me know which airline's ticket you're using, and I'd be happy to move this post to the correct forum. In the meantime I'm going to close the post here, as MilesBuzz ("the latest frequent flyer program buzz") really isn't the best place for it.
