SPG Mastercard is a real sleeper to most Canucks. I get many "huh, what's this?" when I use it. My fave no-fee card, primarily for the ability to transfer SPG points into whatever account needs the mileage.

If you are in the west, don't overlook the Alaska Airlines MBNA Mastercard for Canadians. Annual fee, but bonus points on each annual renewal, and a companion certificate each year, which makes the fee well worth it.

Also, strange as it sounds, the SaveOn Foods VISA works great as a travel card. It's free and flights, especially to Mexico, are the best use we have found for SaveOn Points. Maybe only in BC? A pity.

I always think we should start a Canadian MR and CC info share thread in FT.

Hi YLW,

How good is the Alaska CC because I cannot find more details on the website. How much is the annual fee? Dont see much MR for Alaska Airline in FT. Thanks

click on:
Legal Disclosures
and
Additional details & information

The major stuff in a nutshell:
$75 annual fee
20,000 Bonus Miles upon approval
$50 round-trip companion ticket each year
1 mile for every $1 spent on net retail purchases
No mileage cap
3 miles for every dollar in purchases of Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air tickets and
vacation packages
2 Board Room passes
Additional cards at no extra charge

The $50 (USD) companion certificate is redeemable for one round-trip companion fare for $50 (USD) on Alaska Airlines and/or Horizon Air when traveling with another passenger on a paid published airfare (taxes and other fees may apply). Mileage Plan credit and upgrades are allowed with this offer. Please allow 4-6 weeks after approval of your account for receipt of certificate. (They deposit it in your account as an e-certificate, so it is easy to use online.)

The FT benefit of "$50 round-trip companion ticket each year" is that you collect full miles on BOTH tickets.

There were a number of AS flyers at VJs Phoenix seminar last October and one of the tidbits I learned was that AS allows an individual to have 4 of these cards.

Check out the AS forum. There's lots there about this card.

AS still gives minimum 500 miles per leg. Very short hops is the key. Or very long ones, to Mexico or Alaska.

I second your request for a Canadian Miles Buzz forum, but the same goes for other 'cluster' locations--I am also interested in European and Asian runs. Regional Miles Buzz forums would be nice. The airline forums somewhat serve that function (see AC), but not entirely.

I booked this in July 2007. I couldn't even replicate this exact itinerary a few months later. I was just using it as an example of how to get lots of segments even though the UA website limits you to 6. My experience lately is that ua.com doesn't work very well when you try to add too many segments. (Probably why they call it dot bomb.)

Might have better luck with expedia or orbitz or something else.

Iamfrugal, if Kohoutek had only one credit card to accumulate hotel and airline miles, it would be the Starwood American Express card.

A Starwood app can be found here: https://www201.americanexpress.com/c...nANYrJh%2FS07Q

Thank you Kohoutek.

After reading Margarita girl's MR, decide to build one.

CO: BUF - EWR- IAH- SJC- IAH -EWR- BUF for 6610 miles for 226 a.i.

Would like to have a little help to build a better MR.

There are lots of good ones that don't show there:
eg. TD AAdvantage VISA, AS MBNA Mastercard

But you gotta love that curling rewards card

Also check out the Rewards Canada credit card advice:
www.rewardscanada.ca
see 'articles' and
http://rewardscanada.ca/cccompare.html

Thanks, Kouhoutek, the Starwood Amex looks great, but Canucks aren't eligible. Or do you know a way around this?

Thanks, YLW. I knew I should have looked at that foreign link, but didn't. Thanks for catching my error. Sorry about that folks, eh. No, I don't know a way.
