Special Checks for miles

I was told that some mileage credit cards will issue upon request special checks that allow you to earn points for the dollar amount spent on bills and other merchants that do not take credit card.

I called United Mileage Visa and asked it this was offered and she said yes, but not with the account I was enrolled in. However she would not tell me why I was not eligible or what types of accounts were.

Does anyone know if United does indeed offer this or if any other programs do (without an extra fee for the checks)

thanks!

Welcome to FT!

I think the checks you are talking about depend on the credit card issuer, which would be Chase for United. While I don't have a UA card from United, I know that any convenience checks from my Chase Marriott Rewards Visa not only do not earn miles but will also post to the account as a cash advance. Not sure about the specifics though.

I have had lots of credit cards over the years. The only card that I had that earned miles for convenience checks was the Bank of America USAirways VISA card. It happened 3-4 years ago and only over a 3 month or so period. Write a check (no transaction fee), earn 1 mile for every dollar you write the check for. I got three checks each month for 3 months. I ended up getting about 35K miles and paid little or no interest since I could make a payment on the account online even before the check was posted to my account. It seemed too good to be true and apparently it was - I have never seen such a lucrative offer since.
