SBS Airport

We flew to SBS, Steamboat Springs Airport, about 12 years... earning FF miles on CO via DEN... a fun flight, Rocky Mtn Scareways I believe it was called. I was thinking UA express did this route as well. Is this no longer a commercial airport?
Even though I can go non-stop on AA DFW-HDN, I still liked the convenience of SBS to the ski resort, and the more frequent flight schedules.
It appears TVL, South Lake Tahoe airport, also no longer has scheduled service. AA Eagle used to fly to TVL thru SJC.
Did the airlines choose to discontinue serving these convenient smaller mountain area airports for simple economic reasons or were there safety or other concerns? We've been away from skiing for awhile but will miss the fly-in, ski-out convenience of these airports (and as far as FF mileage the extra miles/segments) and even Stapleton.

According to

http://www.laketahoeairport.com/schedule.html

all flight operations have been suspended by Allegiant.

Did the major airlines leaving these airports have to do with AA/CO cutting back hub service at SJC/DEN or did United Express choose to leave also.

There were a number of problems at TVL.

First was the weather. So many flights got cancelled, either because of snow, rain and thunderstorms, or winds that it made it difficult to provide reliable service.

Second, the casinos were very unsupportive of carriers wishing to fly into TVL.

Third, there was the proximity of RNO as a more reliable destination.

And fourth, environmental and noise concerns raised by residents made any effort to fly scheduled service into TVL difficult to establish and maintain.
