I know there are lots of ways to get points from non-flying related items in the US, what is there for us over the pond in the UK
I've seen a few C card deals but not really anything over a 5,000 sign up bonus - which doesn't really do much for me.

About the only one that I've seen is the conversion from Tesco Rewards points to BA Exec Club miles (and of course the various ways of earning bonus Tesco points from insurance, etc.).

If you are a BMI diamond club member or any * alliance programme member get a BMI credit card. I use mine for absolutely every purchase I can from blockbuster vid hire to Sainsburys food shopping, you get 1.5 miles for every �1 you spend and 3 miles for every �1 you spend with BMI. I am averaging around 1800 miles a month.

Also worth a try is persuading friends and family to sign up to BMI diamond club (you must be a member)you get a very generous 3000 miles per introduction.

I also have a BAA worldcard visa which earns 1 point for every �1 spent (more at BAA airports), you can convert these points into BMI miles - 500 worldpoints will get you 750 BMI miles or to Virgin's programme - 500 for 500. Also, you get an upgrade on the Heathrow express to first when paying with this card.

Royal Bank of Scotland are currently offering an RBS Advanta card in conjunction with AA for a 6500 sign-up bonus (although you only get 5000 of those when you use the card). I don't have it yet, but am sorely tempted by it.

DL also has a UK card (the link is somewhere on http://www.delta.com), plus the VS MC and the BA Amex cards. I believe that UA might also have a UK card. VS offers sign-up bonuses; I'm not sure about the others.

bmi offer a credit card offering two miles per pound spent with a �60 annual fee.

Given that bmi awards are relatively "cheap"; and that the 'miles plus money' option lets you effectively buy miles for 0.6-0.7p per mile once you have half of the required miles for an award [Including business and first awards] - it's a good bet.

Beneficial Bank have a deal with UA to offer MileagePlus points. I called them a few months ago and they did not have any brochures left. If you do a google search for beneficial bank and give them a ring they can sign you up over the phone.

I took out the UK Citibank AA card a few months ago.

Anyone considering it should know that you can't pay your bill over the 'phone each month like every other credit card I've ever had.

Oh no, you have to post them a cheque which will take seven days to clear. Or you can pay cash at a branch - but that still takes 4 days to clear. 4 days! For cash!

Maybe I'm just grumpy 'cos I had to FedEx them a cheque the other week, during an unscheduled trip to the USA

I regularly pay on-line from my Citibank account (though there does not appear to be any reason why another bank account that permits on-line payments would not work as well). However, it is not possible to view the credit card account statement on-line, so one must wait for the paper statement every month (very disconcerting during these days of week long "unofficial" postal strikes).
