IAD-TLV, open return?
Not strictly a FF question, but: Any suggestions about purchasing an inexpensive ticket for a college student to get from IAD/BWI to TLV in late Jan, with an open return date (most likely an open jaw from somewhere in Europe as well)? RT with changeable return date, but on which carrier and what fare class? Purchase OW now, and purchase in TLV OW back home when the date and departing city are figured out? Any alliances/airlines have special fare rules for this sort of thing?

I would buy a flex return ticket to ATH on the alliance of your choice and then a cheap oneway on OA to TLV. Then, once you're in Europe, it's easy to get back to ATH for the return flight.
