Columbia- who would go there?

I recently posted a thread about a South American trip I wish to take in March (Argentina/Chile) but for some reason Columbia keeps calling my name. I read lonelyplanet.com often for the backpackers point of view (and I am one too) and it seems that there is a lot more chatter on the Columbian subject- in other words many people are in and/or planning to go soon. Has anyone been there lately? If so/if not- how do you feel about the safety issues presently- and would you go?

ColOmbia is a great place to visit, I have gone there for my reasons, and feel quite safe. Just watch yourself, don't be stupid etc. If on a CO award I would recomend Copa to CLO (Cali) Also Cartagena is supposed to be nice. If you want to go, please do go. And meet lots of beautiful women while you are there. I do not back pack, but I am sure there are plenty of places to backpack. I infact when I have time plan to track from Cartagent to Quito on busses etc...

Columbia is beautiful. I recommend going to Cartagena. The historic part of the city is gorgeous. The countryside is incredibly lush, the coffee is better than you can imagine, and you can get a great deal on emeralds. Like others have wisely stated, be smart about where you go, keep your guard up, stick to well traveled areas at night (as with any big city) and you should be fine. Expect customs agents to give you a little more attention on your return trip home than they would if you were returning from a place like London or Paris(expect them to ask take a peek through your bags), but as long as you aren't bringing back anything you're not supposed to, you're not going to have any problem.

for some reason Columbia keeps calling my name......

Colombia is great, especially because there are so few American travellers there...

By the way, it is spelled ColOOOOmbia, no "U"
(also, known as locombia).

I have a ColOOOOmbia Baranquilla Carnival Travel story at MrHalliday.com. I always go to ColOOOOmbia using AA FF miles, does anyone think AA might resume service to CTG or BAQ? just threw that in to help make it relevant to this board, which I love to read every night.
Cheers, Mark
