They don't get it

They don’t get it.

I get 4 tickets for the 4th playoff game at Wrigley Field, and the daughters come home from Ann Arbor and Boston respectively.
“You’re flying home for a baseball game” a college friend asks.
“Yes, it’s a frequent flyer ticket”.
“Oh”, the friend responds, satisfied that it didn’t cost real money.

They don’t get baseball, but that’s ok. Lots of people don’t get baseball. And lots of us do. But they don’t get that a frequent flyer ticket is a real currency. It’s one with a much debated value – many threads about that. The value is different to different people – some want tickets, others want upgrades. But it has a real value, and isn’t something that is thrown away frivolously. Baseball is valuable for us. Not for others. Hey, this is America!

I know what you mean - but that is a perception people have. They might say "you've got plenty of miles, why don't you give me a free ticket" - where they wouldn't say "you have plenty of money, why don't you buy me a ticket".

As for the baseball - last year I was lucky enough to get to all of the WS games in Anaheim, and I've been an Angel fan for all of the team's life and most of my own. Being there truly was priceless. Congrats on the Cubs win last night - and good luck.

I've had a rather unpleasant experience with just this. A person I barely knew once asked me through a mutual friend if they could have some miles for an upcoming trip. Apparently, they had heard that I had a lot of miles and obviously thought that they were "free" and that I obviously could spare some, although this person would have never asked for money. It put me (but apparently not them nor the mutual friend, at least knowingly) in an uncomfortable situation.

Talking about miles, upgrades, status, and premium-class travel is a double-edged sword. I think that most of us here are generally enthusiastic about such matters, and like to share this with others, and not out of a sense of bragging. But I think one has to be careful, and not just for the reason that most people may think we're crazy .

I've found that some people do think that FF miles are like coupons you get in the newspaper, and not worth much more (I've also had someone ask me to "give" them some miles, and they were surprised when I was not so inclined). However, to the credit of my brother and his new wife, they were blown away when I gave them biz class tickets to Europe as a wedding present.
