When is $1.55 more than $1.79??
Well, I got taken - and did not enjoy it.
Normally, I do not take the prepaid fuel option when renting a car. As a matter of fact, this may have been the first time ever. I was doing a little research to a help a friend working with the rental car industry and decided to take the option. The sign at the rental counter indicated they charged $1.55 per gallon, and the average price of gas in the area was $1.61, but if they refilled a short tank it would be $3.99 per gallon.
I was curious as to how they calculate the number of gallons since I got my rental contract before I selected my car from the row of Mid-size cars. The agent explained they calculate it on the largest tank in the inventory, and adjust upon return to actual size of the tank of the car rented.
Upon doing the math, I discovered Alamo charged in addition to the $1.55 per gallon, the 11.11% concession recoup charge, and sales take of 18.5%. Do the math! $1.55 plus 29%+ of taxes and you arrive at $2.00 per gallon.
My good deal of $1.55 per gallon just cost me $2.00 per gallon - by far more than any service station I passed.
There oughta be a law!
PS I don't remember seeing any small print explaining these extra charges.

As this is not specifically mileage related, I am going to move the thread to Travel Buzz.
