If you have to pick an airline without regard to FF programs...
If you have to pick an airline without regard to FF programs, which would you pick? UAL, AA, DELTA, NW, CO or AmerWest?
The reason why I ask is relates to the sad chance that all FF programs may cease in their current form in the future.
So, what would you fly in terms of best service, most legroom in coach, etc?

My bias would be in favor of Midwest Express, although service is not quite what it once was.
For a full service airline, it would probably be Continental for reasonable comfort, good attitudes and some semblance of food service remaining.

For domestic, Midwest Express where available and AA (MRTC) everywhere else. Internationally, I would spread the wealth among different international carriers just for different experiences.

Regularly having to fly American, Continental, and Delta (those on your list), I'd have to say...
United.
I fly the airline, not the program.
Good thing United does have a frequent flyer program, or I wouldn't have many miles.

Hands down, Midwest (formerly Midwest Express). However, their hubs are not fully developed so many cities aren't connected.
Farther down the list, Alaska, US Airways, Northwest.
Near the middle, Southwest (previously at the bottom/they haven't improved but others have gotten worse)

If I had no regard for the miles, then the one that is the cheapest along with the one that is the most convenient. If the convenient one (direct flight) is priced higher, then I could go for the price and favor American (maybe spend upto an extra 5-7% on them) for the extra leg-room.

I love Midwest Express as much as anyone, but their route structure is limited and they do not attempt to compete fare-wise in most markets.

Pick the one that gives you the most options. That means, for example, if you're in Dallas, then you go with AMR. Atlanta? DAL. Washington? UAL/USAirways. Houston? Continental. Detroit? NWA.
People here seem to forget about what airlines are all about: TRANSPORTATION. They obsess about this little thing or that little thing, but when it comes down to it, it's all about getting you there.
When you keep that in mind, then in most cities, it becomes obvious who you should fly with.
