How much do you fly?
I know you all know a lot about the travel programs for each airlines, but I am curious on how many miles everyone racks up each year. What is your business/leisure ratio?
I probably fly 25-30k a year. I would say 50% leisure and 50% business. Also, I noticed some people quoted the number of award miles they fly, which is very neat. Thanks! It's crazy to hear how all of you fly so much, how do you all keep track of all your FF accounts and manage all of your mileage? The reason I ask, is because I will be traveling a lot more in the near future and I want to know the best way to manage all of my FF accounts. Thanks guys for all the responses! Did not realize how many people are in the air, Elbow |
Welcome to FlyerTalk, elbow!
I did about 135K paid miles last year & about 15k award miles - so about 150K total. I travel for work weekly though... Total miles racked up last year though, including bonuses & credit card spending, was probably close to 300K+ miles. It was my best year yet...though there are many more that probably earn that in just a couple of months or even in a month! |
Actual flying would be between 50 and 70k a year. Depends on the year.
|
I average 80k paid per year, and an award trip (anywhere from 5-15k). This year, I'll do over 120k paid and a 15-20k award trip.
|
In 2005 I did 420,000 miles. I also vowed never to do that again!
Now it's around 200k a year. |
Thanks for the warm welcome bhatnasx! Sounds like you're an avid/knowledgable FF.
|
Welcome to FlyerTalk, elbow!:)^
Last year I flew just under 200,000 butt-in-seat miles, and I think I'll top that this year. No business travel. |
Welcome to FT!!
My travel has reduced over the years.. Max I did was somewhere between 350k-400k miles/year (paid) last year it was between 150k-180k and this year.. its under 30k so far.. and I do not expect it to go above 100k. More stupid security rules = less and less travel :( |
Welcome to FT, elbow!
I did about 130K paid miles last year. This year I've only done 28K so far. Looking at about 70-80K by the end of the year. My travels have been about 50/50 between business and pleasure. |
Welcome to FT! This year my flying has almost doubled: I'll fly about 120-140k paid miles, plus 7000 or so in a cushy first class award trip home to London. Beware the FT effect, where you find yourself with a very skewed notion of how much flying is "normal" ;)
|
I have averaged 260,000 BIS miles per year, every year for the last 11 years
|
Used to fly about 100000 per year (Split between DL and AA) so I was second tier on both. Now down to 25000 for the last couple if years (70% Biz, 30% leisure) not counting ~10000 or so FF Rewards.
My better half seems to think I should go back to 100000 so she can get things done around the house without this oaf underfoot all the time.:D Cheers |
Scheduled for about 270,000 BIS miles this year. All paid, 97% from my own pocket. This has become a very expensive addiction. At least it doesn't kill you like many other addictions!

Met a chap in Singapore last Wednesday evening who regularly does 400K+ per year these days, much of it commuting SIN-SYD. I asked him to look me up if he's ever in Boston. "How about in two weeks?" was the reply. I hope it happens - he has some great stories!
(He owns his own company and buys economy tickets. He's often upgraded, of course, and understands the FF "game" well, but he does a good fraction of those miles in the small seats. Fortunately for him, he's not large for a guy.) |
I fly about 3 or 4 times a year right now, but I hope to fly more in the future.
|
Welcome to Flyer Talk elbow :)
From the 2007 travel year in review thread, I had 487,716 flown miles from 404 flights. 2006 I had 428,902 flown miles from 267 flights. This year should be a lot less although I've already flown close to 200k miles and 140 flights. |
Last year, I did about 110,000 miles on star alliance (mostly United), 55,000 miles on skyteam (mostly on Korean Air) and a couple of award flights to SE Asia on SQ.
So, I flew around 200,000 miles. My business/leasure ratio was about 60/40. |

This year should be a lot less although I've already flown close to 200k miles and 140 flights. over 300k/year (pre-FT days) my boss used to say "cpx lives on an aircraft. Only comes down once in a while" :) that was taking a flight at lease once a week. My travel significantly reduced after joining FT though. Thanks to TSA! |
Fortunately only a small % of my flights involve TSA. Unfortunately that is still a lot of flights.
|
Kiwi how do you book all that travel? Do you have like 12 secretaries? I have enough trouble keeping up with a few itineraries. Do you keep it all in Outlook or Google Calendars?
Blown away by how much people travel, elbow |
394,315 miles last year
Much quieter so far this year - only around 100k by the end of May. |
Too much, but not nearly enough. By the end of this weekend, I will have re-qualified for 1K with about 110K EQM on United (although that's with the double EQM bonus), about 7K on Northwest, and another few K on airlines not part of Star Alliance or SkyTeam.
I am hoping to hit 75K on NW, 150K on United, plus 25K on others, although that will entail only about 200K BIS miles. Plus an award from the U.S. to Asia, for about 25K more. |
Hey all...Thought i would take this opportunity to make my first post.
I fly in the region of 25-30 sectors per year, all leisure trips, and all just for the love of the "game". This just about gets me 25k miles for SAS EUROBONUS (most trips are discounted Y so only 25-50% miles) so can just hang onto *S. |
Welcome to FlyerTalk, *ALLIANCE!:)^

Used to fly 4 times a year for business (2x Europe and 2x Canada) and about once a year leisure. Since the kids have come, I'm happy doing a once a year or even once in two years vacation trip (just the two of us - no kids!). This year however I did manage to get away twice (international flights to Europe and Middle East). We take each day as it comes!
|
....oh yea, my travel is 99% business.
Last weekend I logged around 18,000 miles in 70hrs r/t, 10 days before that t was around 9,000 miles in 3 days, two weeks before that I shot jobs (photographer, not an assassin) in four countries, on three continents in 3.5 days......this summer I'm planning short haul ,some medium haul , only to try and hang out with my kids at the beach (since I live a block from the beach and have never spent a summer on the beach with my kids!) |
Last year I flew 220,000 miles. But this year I cut way back.....I will only be flying about 100,000 this year. ALL domestic!
|
It varies every year. A few years back I did 250K/yr for 3 years. Last year I only did about 50K. I have a BIS total of about 2.1M over the last 16 years.

...Skytrax sent their staff of 26 auditors out to fly an average of 130 hours a week for four months... i certainly wouldnt have minded in those F cabins though  http://www.forbes.com/forbeslife/bes...109flying.html Skytrax...sent 16 auditors into the field for six months... |
varies per year but on average around 100-200K per year.
|
100k-120k per year if you count 500 mile minimums. I do about 130 segments or so.
|
I fly on my dime, I basically try to mix vacation travel with Mileage runs to make top tier on my current choice of airline. I flew 51k last month
|
Way at the other end of the scale are people like me - 20K miles so far this year. Probably will add another 20 - 30K by the end of this year.
|
Welcome to FT!
I did about 60K BIS last year. This year, I'm at 45K and 53 segments. |
I've done too much this year. Will be taking the month of July and August off unless if something amazing comes up. I've pretty much been on the road non-stop since the UA DEQM promo came out so that I could secure 1K for next year. I've been visiting places I never thought I'd have the time or $ to visit but it just happens that I was able to book all of my trips before prices rose for the summer.

Last year I flew about 70k paid miles and about 25k in award travel. Probably about the same this year
|
I fly about ~150K w/ LH/LX per year and ~80K miles with CX/JL/AA per year. Most of my flights are international to Europe (ZRH/LHR) and Asia (HKG/NRT). When I fly in the US, I mostly fly Jetblue and Virgin (F) :D
Luckily we have very liberal travel rules, all international flights are booked in C or F (if no availability in C), free choice of airline. |
I have flown 120K-140K miles and a total of 75-90 segments a year the last years. So far this year 70K in 50 segments so it will be about the same as earlier. Most flights in ecomomy

Last year I ended up with a total of 466k MQM`s / Status Miles / EQM`s on three different airlines in three different alliances.
This year I am currently at just under 240 MQM`s / Status Miles / EQM`s (as per June 1st). Believe me, at certain points I would like to fly less. |
