Trying to get two people to NRT from IAD using Skymiles
Hello,
My wife and I will have about 95k in skymiles by the end of the month. We want to visit Japan in 2009. We wanted to try and use our skymiles. We've never redeemed our points for international flights. I noticed they're 60-90k depending on when we fly. We have a pretty open schedule and just want to get the most fo our travels.
We've got a family member that has 20k in points we can purchase. It seems like the gifting rate is about 2.75 cents per mile, plus 7.5% tax, correct? Assuming we don't rack up any more points ourselves, we'll need another 5-6K. So it looks like we'll put about 800 bucks into getting enough points to get us both there.
At the current time, this seems like the best route. We have considered just buying the tickets out right and using the point to upgrade, but we can't decide if thats a waste of points or not.
I thought I would ask the veterans how they'd play it out. So, if you were in our shoes, how would you most wisely use the points?
Thanks
