buying miles

I am flying to St. Bart's on a honeymoon this Summer and would like to save money on air travel. A friend has many freq. flyer points and I would like to buy some from him for 2 tickets. Are they transferable?. If so, what is a fair price per point?

Miles are very rarely transferable (with some specific exceptions-- British Airways, for instance, allows "pooling" of accounts in the same household, and AA and CO have allowed transfers, I think, for a pretty hefty fee).

Most programs, though, allow a person with miles to book a ticket for someone else. No need to transfer the miles -- just have the person book a ticket in your name for you.

However, it will most definitely be against the rules of the program in question for you to pay your friend for the ticket.

See if this friend will book the ticket, and recognize the generosity with a very special bottle of wine or some such...
