Can anyone point me in the right direction for info re: paying Federal and State taxes using reward credit card? (AmX Platinum Skymiles, or HH Visa, not Discover!). The only things I've seen so far involve some company raking in an outrageous "convenience fee" in excess of the value of the points I would get by using the card...

Lots of discussion on this on flyertalk. Go to the Amex or Visa boards and do a search (or an individual airline board if that interests you).
Delta's Amex card gives double miles, which halves the cost/mile (although you still pay the convenience fee). Some people see it as a quick way to get miles, and to delay their tax bill by up to 8 weeks, depending on your billing cycle.
