I've only once redeemed miles for a ticket and that was for a family emergency -- mainly so the return date could be changed easily and without penalty.

suzy-unfortunately that feature of plan-ahead award tickets is gone. Now you will be charged $100 for a change to an award ticket just like a change to an economy ticket. That change has really devalued award tickets as it was a good reason to choose an award over a paid ticket -when you might need flexiblity on the return.
