What Counts As A Once/Lifetime Status Match?

Does a completed challenge count?

How about if an airline that once comped you gets absorbed by another (AmWest and USAir)?

Really depends on the carrier. I know with AA you can do a challenge more than once, but just not two years in a row as a form of requalifying. I believe UA's "challenge" (which give status in advance) are once in a lifetime. I think with absorbed carriers it really depends on the specific circumstance, and don't think there's a general rule.

Pardon the ignorance, but can someone explain what a "challenge" is in this circumstance?

AA does this where you have to earn a certain number of points in a certain amount of time to get status for a whole year, basically as a form of "fast track." In this case, if you earn 10K Q-points on AA within 90 days you earn Play, or for 5K Q-points you get Gold. Hope that makes sense.

It sounds pretty easy to stay elite on AA.
Do a Plat challenge on AA in year 1. AA would only drop you to Gold in year 2.
Do another Plat challenge in year3, and ...

In 2003 I asked United if they could move my status up early as since I had already booked far beyond the next elite threshold. I think this was GM -> 2P

I was told no over the phone and then the next day my account was upgraded. I still wonder to his day if this counted as my one time comp even though it was not a status match.
