A bit risky but you could try US who will be flying to DUB startng 4 May (DUB-PHL-DTW). Assuming there is one running, you sign up for a challenge allowing you to earn status for flying 1/4 of the usual miles in a quarter (for Gold or Silver Preferred only), It's very possible to upgrade using miles or systemwide upgrades in the past (V fares excluded in recent years).

I'm not up to date on the most recent changes so check the US forum.

Thanks everyone for the replies to my questions. I have been looking at these and trying to make some shape of it all.

It looks like a problem if I stick with KLM as they will be switching to NW out of AMS which means a DC10. One question, if I book with KLM and fly NW 'Metal' do I still continue to rake up the bonus points with KLM and what would the chances of an operational upgrade be like?

Thanks for the thoughts, keep them coming and Ill have a look at the US Air this evening.

Regards

Check Alaska before you commit to the others. You will earn miles on AA, BA, KL, NW, and CO flights. Bonus eligible on AA, NW, and KL. Upgrades on NW domestic. 50% bonus at 25K level and 100% at 50K level.

You will still rack up elite and cos bonuses flying NW (or any other KL partner for that mattter) but you might not necessarily have many double-points type special offers on NW operated routes.
Chances of operational upg as KL elite on NW are low and virtually non-existent on CO.
