I agree with the article. However the competition in the US market is quite intense. If foreign airlies were to compete here, they might be forced to cut back on various amenties in order to compete with domestic airlines--although they could use the profit from other routes to support high service quality in the US.

Has econmists or other tried to model this (ie simulate introduction of foreign airlines into this market)?

Not a bad article for McPaper. I'd like to see some competition from airlines that aren't after customer money with one hand and our government's money with the other.

We need to contact our Congressmen and Senators. After being kicked in the teeth by Delta in its SkyMiles Medallion changes, I would welcome the opportunity to fly any number of European airlines on domestic routes, particularly in connecting to Europe-bound flights.

One of the best solutions for United is to let Lufthansa buy and operate its carcass.
Lufthansa knows how to be profitable even in bad times.
