Status comping
OK - As of this morning I am a brand new US CP (~platinum). I often hear of comping by OAs.
1. Do OAs comp and, if so, which ones?
2. Do they just comp status, or are any miles comp'ed as well?
3. What are the mechanics of comping? Do you call them, do they call you, how do you go about it?
Besides airlines, how about hotel programs? I am an HH diamond and PC Gold (former Platinum). Any reciprocal comping there with my airline/hotel status?
Maybe this is covered in other threads, but I couldn't find the specific info I needed, so here's a chance for the real gurus to show off their knowledge of arcana.

I am US Gold. United just comped me to Premier Exec through Feb 2004. All I did was call and then fax my USAir DM Statement.

General rule: airlines and hotels are tight with their top level. You've earned US CP, but that by itself won't automatically translate to 1K, ExPlat, etc. Likewise, HH Diamond can't automatically be turned into MR Plat, etc.
Hotel programs throw around their low and mid levels for free. Just read the boards. If you need a midlevel comp on another airline, you can probably get one: again, go to the individual boards. Some airlines claim to play the "once in a lifetime" rule tight, so you might consider whether you really *need* the comp now, whether you could use it better in late 2004 (worst case: you are a US Gold not requalifying), or whether you don't really need it at all.
