Marvella wants to Know!!
Hallo Ladies, It's time to confess...... Queen Marvella wants to know! Other then the usual collection of Blankets, and glass wear, (I have enough UA blankets to cover half of South Beach.) What have you taken from your favorite airplane? A few years back Kitty Meow and I were on a flight from La Habana to Santiago de Cuba on that dreaded airline Cubana! (for the record, old soviet plane, bad seats, and the bathroom...Girlfriends! I wouldn't, I couldn't .!!......I'm sure you get the picture.) Any how we were seated in the front section just behind the cockpit, so apparently the pilot stored his items overhead in our compartment. Well little old Kitty Meow spotted the pilots hat up there, and forced me to stuff it into my bag after the plane landed. Like everything else in Cuba, the hat shows the years of wear and tear, but it's become one of my favorite piece of airline Memorabilia, plus it's a great prop for a few of my musical numbers. When your young you do crazy things! Queen Marvella |
Now I know why airfares continue to rise at ridiculous rates!!
|
I am probably the last person in the world to fly the flag of restraint...but!
Marvella, y'all could have gotten that captain in a lot of trouble. They are REQUIRED to wear those caps...steal their shoes, their socks, their underwear, sure! Go for it! But htey have certain contractual requirements with the airline, and while it ain't exactly being in the military, they do have to maintain certain standards of dress. Bottom line: This is NOT FUNNY. How would you like to be doing an engagement and find a vital part of your (contractually *Required* )costume was missing? Please tell Kitty Meow this was not a ha-ha. Please understand for yourself that this was not a ha-ha. not funny. at all. |
I'm gonna tell.........
|
as a roman catholic, I already have confessed, been forgiven, did my prayers, and have forgotten. Paradise (in november) is waiting.
|
Marvella, quite frankly I am shocked that you would be involved in such a dasterdly deed as stealing from an airline.
Don't you know that's what hotels are for. MF PS: Where does your name originate from? All I can think of is MARV which is an acronym for Manoeuverable Re-entry Vehicle, but that couldn't have anything to do with it could it. |
Rudi: I look forward to attending mass with you at the Party in Paradise http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Merry: LOL! Marvella: Besides pillows (only if I plan on sleeping while waiting at an airport for a connection after a red-eye), my only and best score was on a TWA flight to Paris in the mid-eighties. On the head-rests of the first class seats were a white cover (about the size of a big napkin attached with velcro) with the words First Class embrodered in a deep red hue. As I passsed through the cabin on the way out, I snagged one. Until about a year ago, it sat on my work chair in my office. When a colleague-friend took another job last year, I gave it to him as a going-away present (he had always coveted it). But, like Rudi, I have already been forgiven for that indiscretion, and agree that, in general, there is far better booty at the hotel than the airplane! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif |
I received from a friend of mine (who flew to very interesting places before he was married) a small melamine dish from Aeroflot (about 1cup in size, used for a side dish on a meal tray) in a rather revolting brown color. I use it to hold my keys, coins, etc when I empty my pockets. I really like it-it makes me smile to use it.
|
A friend of mine has very nice 1st class HP coffee cups!
|
My guess on the origin of Marvella's name is from Rio de Janeiro, the Marvelous City (Cidade Maravilhosa).
|
my name-guess: it is the "copy-righted" version of MARBELLA = where the beutiful/rich & famous meet and play Golf (in Spain).
|
'Marvella' is just the female version of Marvellous, isn't it? Or at least a personification of the female version...
Hotels will actually charge you for things you take if they are of significant value. And I don't mind. Purchased a beautiful bowl at the Park Hyatt in Sydney once - a wonderful souvenir of a marvellous hotel! Buying instead of stealing also made sure I got a brand new one, instead of a second hand... The Grand Hyatt in Bangkok also sells some beautiful celadon dishes! |
My mom gave me her collection of airline cutleries collected in the 70's and 80's but now I lost them in one of my moves. She had them all! I never thought my MOM would do such a thing. But back in the 80's didn't we all collect those cool wrapped soap bars from the bathrooms? Eastern Airlines, Braniff, Pan Am, etc.
I think the only odd thing that I have is a seat sticker: "Please fasten your seat belts" that is now glued onto my toilet bowl... |
I have to confess... I have NEVER, EVER TAKEN ANYTHING FROM AN AIRLINE!!! I can't. Only because I would be the one who would get caught.
I do have a first class napking Yvonne gave me to keep the champaign she gave me for my birthday cool. She said keep it. It's a nice momento. HOtels are another story... I do take the little bottles of mouthwash and if they leave it the bubble bath. These are two things I don't normally buy and only use for "special occassions." But I leave an extra dollar or two for the maid to make up for it! I can't do it! You folks (esp. Marvella) have a lot of gumption! Not me. I guess I'll never be in politics! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif CATMAN |
OMNI!!! CMDR CATCOP says he would put you all in a room for 20 minutes to comb EDDIE for going SOOOO OOOMMMNNNIII!!!
Eddie by the way does not like to be combed or his nails clipped!! CATMAN |
Well, Gents and "Ladies", I'm voting with Merry for the orifice, oops.... origin, of the name..........
[This message has been edited by JAWS_II (edited 02-09-99).] |
JawsII -- at least orifices are manoeuverable . . . anyway, it's most likely Marvella is the anglicized 'maravilla' which is Spanish for miracle.
Of course, I don't take anything from airplanes but, if I did, they'd be those nifty wee wine glasses UA serves in first class. |
KatW, Would you like to buy some?
|
Double-OMNI warning---No apologies, but Catman, I'll groom ole Eddie for ya. I've got so many scars on my body already, a few more won't matter...
Anyway, my weakness for airline stuff is the little salt and pepper shakers that Delta has on their first class meal trays. I collected these until I had a full service for 12. When we have dinner guests, each one gets his/her own salt and pepper shaker. I gotta tell you, it has been a MAHvelous hit at the Nechetsky household! Oh, and for the record, I asked the FAs if, instead of free drinks (I never drink on planes), I could have the s/p shakers instead, and got their blessing. Much cheaper than supplying me with liquor, so everyone made out, and they were NOT stolen. Go ahead, call me Suzy homemaker, I'll say I still have more TOOLS in my garage that most people (Arrrh, arrrhhh!) ----OK, End of OMNI |
I have to confess, I do have my share of mementos from various airlines (usually given as gifts from friendly FA's). But the thing I most covet is a collection of cocktail glasses from AA first class. They are a great shape, with good weight - a joy to hold. However, I have just not felt able to sneak any into my carry-on. Anyone know where you could buy some?
|
Some sources of airline china (other than "eight-balling" it (read: swiping) off the aircraft: some of the china outlets such as Pfaltzgraff and Mikasa sometimes sell excess inventory of china and glassware from the airlines whenever new china and glassware (to keep up with the newer image.
And yes... it's not unusual for my dinner to be eaten with a fork bearing a likeness of "Herman" (the old North Central/Republic mascot) and a knife bearing the logo of Eastern Airlines! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif The good silverware's in the closet! |
I couldn't imagine using first class airline cutlery at home. The magnetic kinves would stick to each other in the drawer and come out attached like a string of paper clips.
And frankly, I've never quite understood the glasses and stemware. I don't think less of myself dringking from a plastic cup, and the once or so a year I see the glass break on the floor of the plane convinces me that it's a stupid idea. Now, if I could "liberate" one of those airphones and hook it up in my guest room - that would be cool. For once, I'd like to be the guy collecting $3 per minute for a phone call. I guess that's just maturity. As has been said in many other places, young boys want to BE sports superstars, but as you get older, your tastes change to wanting to OWN sports superstars. |

good wine MUST be served in GLASS (or stone)! and that's not only because of "how it looks like". I thought that even my colleagues in the US learned that in the past years - as they learned to stop asking for ice-cubs in the best bordeaux or napa-valley wines ... (sorry - happened during my first US-trip about 35 years ago). other materials, like paper, carton, pet, etc. will (laboratory-proven) influence the taste, without any delay. Already your lips/tongue expectations are mislead, if they touch other stuff than glass before tasting the wine! And - think of kissing - this matters (and influences the following enjoyments ...). (one exception: you can "STORE" ready-to-drink wine in "Tetra Pak", like milk - 80% of Spains ready-to-drink wine are packaged that way). [This message has been edited by Rudi (edited 02-10-99).] |
OK. I stand corrected on good wine.
But a Bloody Mary or a Vodka and tonic? ...or CATMAN's Pepsi? [This message has been edited by NJDavid (edited 02-10-99).] |
|
the stronger the drink and it's taste - the less it matters.
and my personal judgement with juices/soft-drinks? no problem (do Colas taste?). [This message has been edited by Rudi (edited 02-10-99).] |
OMNI: I take my Pepsi straight from the can. With a straw if available. It preserves the taste (Yes it seems COMMON but at 3 in the morning the only ones who sees me is my manager and the producer, who's a health nut.)
Yes I would like those little salt shakers. But I can't bring myself to taking them or even asking for them. I can't take anything unless I earn it or ask for it (it's why I'll never be a Hollywood star. Just a "featured performer" on FLYERTALK! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif As I said: What I really want are the WINGS from the big airlines, esp. United. THen I can wear my wings with my Brooks Brother Blue Blazer and maybe get to sit in the cockpit! |
Catman:
Somewhere buried away in the memorabilia I have a pair of Eastern, UA(the old "shield" logo), AND National flightwings http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Of all of them I think my favorite is the National one. I always did like their sun logo. All of these were earned under the legitimate excuse of being a kid at the time... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif JD |
OMNI: that's what's great about being a kid.
Getting all sorts of cool stuff like wings! I had the ORiginal Pan am and Eastern wings. And Lionel Trains. and baseball cards and other fun stuff. Until one day My aunt decides to clean my room AND GAVE EVERYTHING AWAY!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif Maybe If I wear a silly hat the F-A's will give me wings! CATMAN |
Hey Matt, I thought you surely would have carted off something from the RCC. Maybe one of the lounge chairs. Or are they nailing everything down in there these days?
|
I haven't/wouldn't take anything from the airlines! Yuk....used items, no thanks. Call me prissy, but I could NEVER serve my guests items that were handled by thousands. I am not too trusting of the cleaniness of those glass items. I don't salt/pepper anything....I have seen too many salt shakers that the salt doens't come out...how much of that is recycled? Don't know and don't want to know. It gives me the creeps to think about it. And besides, hard to justify to your guests all the world travels, then serve them with stolen property! I think more highly of my guests. If I need something that badly, I'll purchase it myself.
OMNI--Yes, it's good to be a kid, you do RECEIVE (not stolen) some cool stuff usually anyplace you go. Such as, restuarants....crayons, coloring books, etc. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Sorry for venting, but I feel better now. [This message has been edited by traveltoomuch (edited 02-10-99).] |
Rudi...I agree! Wine...glass...Riedel.
|
Well, mileking, now that you mention it, I did pick up my entire living room set (tv included) from the RCC at ord. Of course, getting the lounge chairs to fit into the overhead bins was a bit of a challenge, but they were STILL not the biggest items that I saw people trying to stuff in there.
Traveltoomuch, do you have the same problem handling cash that has been handled by thousands of other people??? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Actually, I always wonder about rolls and bread that are served in restaurants: is it fresh or recycled???? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif |
Matt...no problem with cash, helps motivate me on a daily basis! Helps me PURCHASE NEW items to use in my home! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
|
For those of you coming to the Boston get-together:
LouLou's Lost & Found 121 Newbury Street Boston, MA (617) 859 8593 sells goods from hotels, trains and planes... they have some really cool stuff, and all the salt and pepper shakers you could ever want. ... traveltoomuch, I'm sure that autoclaving these items would sanitise them sufficiently for you to be perfectly safe using them. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif [This message has been edited by baobab (edited 02-14-99).] |
Lou Lou's might be a fun place to visit if thos eattending the FLyerTalk Boston convention have time.
But I have a confession... (bring up the soap opera organ music...) I sometimes... sometimes... TAKE PENS FROM THE HOTEL ROOM!!! Hey! I'm a writer and I like to have something handy to write those notes. I realized what I do sometimes when I went to fill out my immigration form with a pen from the Hyatt in DFW. OK, So I'm not perfect either. But I odn't take towels or furniture! CATMAN |
When is the Boston get together? I will be there from 02/17 thru 02/21.
|
What about the British Airways Sleeper Suits? Those fancy duds they give you in 1st class on overnight flights?
I felt a bit guilty keeping mine, but I guess it's OK in comparison to what I've read here. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
Omni--the beer in Berlin was sure delicious in thin-rimmed German glasses, not the thick tankards/mugs that they use in the US.
My secret collecting vice is menus from the flights I have been on-I always bring them home with me and frequently swipe them from the other classes. I'm a foodie and it is so interesting to see what is popular/trendy/delicious to different cultures etc. |
OMNI: Jamiel, I'm glad you had a great time and enjoyed the beer in Berlin (although even better beer might be in other German cities!)
I keep those little toiletry kits they gave with the socks, sleeping mask, toothbrush etc. I keep them in bags as backup if I lose my big shaving kit. As for the sleeping suits... If B-A didn't want you to take them they would either collect them before you land or tack on an extra fee on the ticket for taking them. Maybe it's best that they let the flyers take them. The laundry costs would be outrageous! CATMAN |
