Headphones

I wanted to hear what you all have to say in reference to your experiences with "Noise Canceling Headphones".
Recently I splurged and got myself a pair of Bose "Noise Canceling Headphones" and I have to say I'm in love! They filter out a high percentage of the white noise around you and I find that it makes a huge difference flying with them vs. without them. I shopped around and tried on other brands, but nothing comes close to these- nada!
The thing I'm not clear on is what the "official" rules are for inflight use, specifically during take off & landing. Sometimes I'm told to remove them entirely, or the FA simply makes sure that they're not switched on, or they don't seem to care at all because they aren't hooked up to an electronic device.
Are they worth +$300 to you? What do you do to get some peace and quiet on a m-run?
And, what's the scoop on inflight use status?

I certainly appreciate them when AA hands them out, they do work as advertised. But I won't spend the money myself.
