Yes, we all have a problem. It's probably good for us to go cold turkey every once in a while. At a minimum it makes us appreciate FT all the more when it comes back!

We, Flyertalkers, should have an emergency backup plan like we all meet online in some chatroom somewhere when the site is down.
I propose we just start posting to a certain travel related bulletin board run by a person with a very strong personality.

Perhaps you refer to that other bulletin board? You know, the one where people always play nicely, and say nice things about FlyerTalk, and ...

Well.. Seeing as I was posting as it was crashing I'd say it was an application / database error..

The site began to slow down and served fewer and fewer images.. So the processor must have been going hell for leather running in circles..

My guess is a reboot solved all the problems and cleared a 'race' condition..

Based on impirical knowledge, but what the hell do I know

Okay, I'm in the dark here. Several people have mentioned meeting somewhere else when flyertalk.com is down.

Could someone please share WHERE THIS IS?

Obviously, wherever we meet will not be as good as flyertalk but it will do in a pinch.

Don't know about that. I hear (let's watch the HEARSAY... We're sure they are all fine folks over there) I have been sent several screen shots of what went on there over the last several days which prove it! I even hear that one or two of their moderators may get booted over it!?!

FewMiles posted a link (a couple of replies back) to a thread on the other board (which talked about FT being down, actually).

I think if you go to chexfan.com and look at the chex-links.....you will find it....and they do not have people (who are over the edge 90 % of the time) called monitors.

In case you might have missed it, we had put FT down for the weekend to finish the move and fine tune our decision to invest in a dual-processor server - and the weekends are the slowest time on FT in order to accomplish this.
We were finding that when users were at the highest peak there were some performance problems and while you may not see any difference in normal times on FT, the extra processor should help.

There is no perfect time to have the Board down so we took the path of least traffic which we know is still not the path of least resistance.

The shutdown a few days earlier was so that our server farm could move our servers to their audited facility which was/is a requirement for a venture we're getting involved with.

Sorry for the rest - and thanks for your continued support of FlyerTalk.

Thanks for the info, Randy! I think the amount of discussion regarding the board being down is a good indicator of how much it is used and appreciated. Thanks for continuing to do this for us, and for continuing to make it better!

No travel/flying BB comes even close to FT IMO. However, as SPN Lifer has linked above, www.MoreMiles.org is a very interesting place to drop in on now and again, and most of the folks there will be familiar to you. Much smaller though, and a very different style to FT.

I also find a lot of inside info and comment on major airlines - mostly from staffers, can be found at www.USaviation.com
