More US flyer leglislation proposed
Check this one out from CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/TRAVEL/NEWS/9902/10/passenger.rights.ap/
Amongst other passenger rights, it requires airlines that held passengers stranded in airplanes for two hours or more to repay them twice the value of their ticket, Passengers held for three hours or more would receive three times the value of their ticket, with the same trend holding true for passengers held four hours or more.
As it states, "much of the legislation stems from complaints after snowstorms stranded travelers in Detroit over the New Year's holiday. In some cases, passengers were stuck on planes for eight hours or more within view of the terminal because they either could not take off or pull into a gate."
How often has that happened to you?

I've never been on a runway/taxiway for anything longer than about 2-1/2 hours and that occurred only once.
I was on a UA flight from SFO once where we were out taxiing and it was discovered that a passenger was not supposed to be on the plane. The passenger was a young Mexican woman who spoke almost no English. The plane was bound for Washington, DC (IAD)and her ticket was for that flight - only problem was that she had wanted to go to Washington state (Seattle), not DC. The travel agent messed up her reservations. Anyway, some genius at UA decided they would return to the gate to let her off the plane. And if this wasn't bad enough, she had a bag in the cargo hold and yes, UA had ground crew searching the hold for over an hour before they located the thing. All told the flight was delayed for about two hours. People, many who missed international connections at IAD, were furious. I was too, and it's one reason I really don't take a liking to UA.

Only got stuck on a plane in CLT for about 3 hours a few years ago for severe thunderstorms !!! Could understand the reasons not going back to the gate, it would probably have taken another 2 hours to round up some of the other passengers!!!
Just what we need another way to drive more airlines out of bussiness, as we would have HIGHER FARES and less choice if we let let the politicos try any form of reregulation!!!

The one that annoyed me most was about 8 years ago with America West.
Their pilot and co-poilot spent too much time on the tarmac waiting for a slot the night before, and had too many hours logged to fly their scheduled flight the next day.
HP BOARDED THE PASSENGERS ANYWAY, then told us they were first sending a pilot from another NY airport. Not by helicopter - by bus. We were not allowed to leave the plane. We waited for 2 hours till the pilot arrived.
I have always wondered why HP couldn't have sent the pilot earlier if they knew about the problem the night before. The $50 voucher didn't come close to soothing the anger - I've haven't flown HP since (other than CO codeshares).
