Inter-line connections

I've never done an inter-line connection before. So, tell me if this is the smartest way. I'm taking a Korean flight from Hong Kong to Seoul. Korean arrives at Intl. Terminal 1 at 1330. I'm connecting to a Thai flight for Taipei which leaves at 1800 out of Intl. Terminal 2.

So, do I check my baggage to Seoul as my "final" destination when I'm in Hong Kong. Then claim my baggage and go thru immigration/customs at Seoul after the Korean flight, then run over to Terminal 2, check-in at Thai, go thru immigration again, and pay the "departure" tax?

Is there an easier way to do inter-line connections?

Thanks.

You should be able to check your bags all the way to Taipei. This depends on whether Korean Air and Thai have an agreement on interline check-ins - most airlines do. If you do this, you should still be able to go out through customs if you want - but you won't have to check-in again. I have done this a number of times in the past. For example, I once checked my bags with British Airways for a flight from London / Gatwick to Manchester and they took care of the check-in for my onward Delta flight to the USA at the same time. I also once flew Aeroperu from Cuzco to Lima connecting to Avianca in Lima to Quito. Aeroperu - though it took some time - managed to check me in for my onward flight as well. If Aeroperu can do it, I'm sure Korean Air should be able to do it. Hope this helps you out ...

Thanks leroy.

So in other words, I still have to go thru immigrations to enter Korea to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, then go thru immigration again and pay that depature tax.

Am I reading you correctly?

Thanks.

Seawolf: I have done inter-line transfers many times and rarely had troubles--however, I have no experience with Korean Airlines before. Make sure they tag you all the way to TPE to start with. And let the gate agents know that you do not have intent to enter Korea. They should be able to arrange someting to get you around all the immigaration and tax stuff--you won't be the only one. If you fly Business or First, ask a concierge to meet you when you land in Korea. Happy travel.

I found the homepage for Kimpo airporat in Seoul. I guess there is no way around immigration. However, passengers in transit are suppose to get a "PSC exemption form" to exempt them from the departure tax.

Upon arrival in SEL, just as you get outside the jetway there will be Korean personnel asking for transit passengers. You will be a transit passenger. They will ask for you passport and tickets. After having your carry on baggage x-rayed, you will be put on a bus to terminal 1. In terminal 1, you will be escorted to a transit desk where they will issue you a boarding pass for your Thai flight. You will not have to clear immigration or customs. You will not have to pay a departure tax. Your baggage will be checked thru. In terminal 1, there is a upstairs transit lounge with a resturant, snack bar, smoking area, game room and a United First Class Transit Lounge. If you are traveling First Class on Thai you may be able to get a pass to the UA Lounge.
