Mega Miles on Amtrak???
Got an email from Amtrak that they are offering 500 bonus guest rewards points for RT tickets bought online. I didn't see and restrictions other than it had to be purchased in May and travelled by end of June. Anyone see any problem in getting a cheapie ticket on Amtrak and getting these points? So we actually have to travel? I priced a Chicago-La Grange Road ticket RT at $4.90 with the 30% promo they have now. For this you would get...
10 points (2 points/$)
500 points (online bonus)
510 points = 510 miles for $4.90 = 104 miles/$ or 1,000,000 miles for $9608.

Maximum of 500 bonus points per day, per member.

Thanks for posting!
Unfortunately, I do not think any $5 fares exsist in NYC Penn station.
Can you suggest any super cheap NYC fares?

This is a great idea ! Too bad, as writeorich says, there are no low fares from Penn Station. The fares are way too high.
For example, to Newark it's about $40 round trip and Yonkers $34.
Another thing I noticed is that the website doesn't allow a passenger to price/pick return options that have 1 hour > between segments. Makes the trip easier so you won't have to wait an one hour or more at the station.
I receive this message
Please allow a minimum of 1 hour between each segment in your trip. Please select another train combination. Thank you.

A good question is do you really have to travel though to get the bonus. You have plenty of unreserved trains out of NYP. How are they to track if you actually get on board. Sucks that the trip to Newark though is $40!

Actually Amtrak doesn't verify who gets on board, so you really do not have to travel to get the bonus. If the NYP-Newark fare wasn't $40 I would have asked my mother, who travels every day to Newark, to ride Amtrak instead of NJ Transit, which is cheaper $5 r/t.
Oh, here's a tip.. If you want to save an additional 15% on Amtrak, use the Student Advantage card. It's so easy to get the card !
Edit to include that you cannot combine both discounts.. Oh well.

So if Amtrak doesn't verify, why not purchase 31 RT tickets from Chicago to La Grange Road!!!! If you have to actually pick the tickets up after purchased online, you can do that at any station. Has anyone found an RT fare less than $7?
