SWU = System Wide Upgrade.

You'll be able to find lots of information about SWUs in the United forum. SWUs are gifted to UA's top travelers (those who travel in excess of 100,000 miles/year) annually when our credentials for the new year are received. I believe that USAir might use the same terminology as well; you can check that airline forum, too.

Some folks on Flyertalk do not realize this, but there are other airlines besides United ( ), and some of those other airlines issue (or recently issued) "SWU" certificates, such as US and Delta.

Personally I consider SWU to be more of a generic term to also include AA VIPOW's which act like other airline's SWU's.
