I have noticed that there are still cheap fares even for tickets bought a few days out. I can still get an ATL-IAD roundtrip, 3 days in advance for around $300 on DL. Same ticket a year ago would have been $700+.
Just to reiterate the above posts, unless flying X-country, FC really doesn't have much of an advantage anymore domestically. Sure the seats are "slightly" larger and the drinks are free, but if you really wanted it, the same drink can be bought for $3-4 in coach. The reduction in meal service has resulted in a major reduction in the appeal of FC. Just my opinion. Not that I'd turn down an upgrade
