Reason for U-turns over DC

I was driving home from work today, and noticed that a number of contrails of aircraft coming in from the east simply turned around over the DC area. Not sure how many aircraft, maybe 5 to 10 contrails though. Anybody know the reason for it? I fully expected to come home and see something on CNN or something, but thankfully, there were no headlines. What gives?

It could be military aircraft doing a flyover for someone who was buried at Arlington Cemetary. Or, didn't Bush come back from his ranch recently? Those could have been the escort planes flying off after he landed at Andrews.

They were fairly high up (around 30K feet or so), so I doubt its a flyover. A fighter escort for Bush seems viable though.

Since 9-11 there are frequent nights with continous aircraft flyover noise. Not every night. Never heard it before 9-11.
