Going to FIJI! Which Frequent Flyer Program?

Hi, I need your help. I have a honeymoon coming up in a year or two maximum. I'm trying to figure out which airline is the best for doing this. I live in Milwaukee, so flying out of MKE or ORD is the best for us. Here are my current balances:

67k miles on United
40k on NWA
25k on American
25k on Delta

What airline should I concentrate the most on? I have 3-4 trips that I have to book by year end including plenty of hotel stays, car rentals, and credit card purchases. I'm assuming United, since it appears it only takes 60k miles to fly from here to there.

Thanks so much for your input.

Try *alliance. 2 years ago I flew on AIR NEW ZELAND ( * Alliance, same as
UA ) , on an award (25K miles in Y ) OAKLAND N.Z. To Fiji RT.
I did not check but there must be other airlines ( in * Al. or in other
Alliances ) that fly to FIJI.

That would be Auckland, NZ - with the kiwi accent it probably sounds like Oakland

There are a few airlines that fly to Fiji.

Air NZ (*A) flies to NAN from LAX and also AKL.
Air Pacific (QF partner) flies to NAN from AKL, HNL, LAX, SYD, NRT
Pacific Blue (oz/nz-based LCC) flies to NAN from BNE, MEL, SYD
Korean Air (ST) flies to NAN from ICN.

For a simple award, *A looks best (no big detour to Seoul). Otherwise flights from Australia and NZ are fairly cheap so an award to SYD or AKL then paid ticket.

Looks to me like it's at least 80k UA miles per person for North America to Oceania (which includes Fiji). (120k/150k for biz/first). See http://www.united.com/ual/asset/Star...d_chart_v2.pdf

Air Pacific also partners with AA. It takes 75/125/145k AA miles per person for Y/C/F to get from North America to the South Pacific on an AAward.

In either case, in addition to building up the necessary miles, you're also going to need to find availability, which is never easy (although in my experience UA and AA tend to have better award availability than DL/NW/CO).

You might do better concentrating on saving money to buy a ticket rather than trying to accumulate the miles for so specific an award--unless you anticipate having very flexible dates of travel.

If you go to Fiji on Air New Zealand you will accrue on United Mileage Plus. If you go on Air Pacific you can accrue on AAdvantage.

Thanks for the tips guys. 80k is correct, I was looking at an incomplete chart. It looks like UA/*A is where I'll have to accumulate. Hopefully I get the rest of my miles quickly enough to get a seat! I just put a $6k wedding ring on my UAL/Chase CC, so there's 73k miles total.

Thanks for the tip of just buying my ticket from Australia/NZ to Fiji.

Free stopover in Fiji? Does anyone have more details on which airline on how this is accomplished?

You all help a lot!

You could also open an Alaska Airlines account. Your miles from American, Delta, and Northwest will all earn EQM for you on AS. Go here for a full list of AS airline partners.
