Work is leaving *A, which program should I join?

Our corporate TA can status match my 1K with NW, DL or CO with their new contracts with them. I fly out of PDX and mainly do Asia routes. Which of these airline program comes in second after UA? Why?

One less 1K to fight for your up-grade starting 3/1/08...

Of those, NW has, by far, the most extensive asian route network (and is the only one out of the three with transpac ops from the west coast) -- both CO's domestic first wins hands down for premium travel; internationally, their business first is a cut above NWs WBC and leagues ahead of delta's international premium cabin.

Wow, that really sucks for you. I assume you're the exception when it comes to where your company's employees travel -- if they're seriously going to force people into Northwest or Continental for Asia travel, they're nuts.

Out of PDX, you have no real choice other than Northworst. For Beijing, for example, you'd have to go PDX-EWR-PEK if you did CO, and that is some serious backtracking. At least with NW, you can transit through Tokyo with a reasonable flight arrangement.

That's a really tough question, though, because Northwest's business class really isn't up to snuff, particularly as UA goes through its new revamp over the next couple of years.

If my company terminated their UA contract, I would flip!

On the bright side, you still have quite a long time before you have to switch.

At any rate, I'd say go with CO and it's program, than fly NW when needed (even to Asia). They're pretty close partners and you should get pretty nice benifits as a CO elite when flying Northwest.

Since the OP flies mainly Asia routes, I would think it would be most advantageous to join NW's program as opposed to CO's. NW does a lot of bonus mile promos/giveaways, and if you are a CO elite flying NW, you won't get any of those promos. In cases where the OP does fly domestically, he/she can choose NW or CO and get upgrades on both carriers, and have the additional option of DL, which will earn miles but doesn't provide upgrades to NW or CO members.

Why won't they let you fly UA? Maybe the boss has an appreciation for antiques so he wants you to ride on the NW DC-10s?
