If you buy two adjacent seats because you want additional space, some airlines will give you the double miles but NOT double EQM's. You should call the airline you want to use and ask them what their policy/procedure is.

No matter how many seats you purchase for yourself, other persons, your stuffed animals, your musical instrument, or other posessions, no airline that I know of intentionally awards more miles to you than a single seat would earn. Doing so is against most airline's published policies, and most work hard to try to thwart people from doing this.
Why? I don't know. There have been NUMEROUS times I could have purchased a cheap seat, had more room, added to their revenue, and the extra elite-qualifying miles would have pushed me into buying additional seat(s).
Sure would make mileage runs a lot easier and faster, too!
In fact, three seats together, so I could lay down from LHR-SEA at deep discount economy prices, each earning elite-qualifying miles would be SUCH a no-brainer! And they PROBABLY could even trim some of those HORRIBLE taxes too, if I didn't put other people in them.

Last year when I had to wear a brace on my knee, I bought two tickets on several trips for the extra room. United gave me the extra miles but no extra bonuses or extra segments for elite qualification level. I did have fax all the boarding pass stubs to Mileage Plus to get the credit and with a short explaination of the medical necessity.

Southwest stirred up a hornet's nest with this one when they had the flap over wide passengers. If memory serves, a number of FTers expressed willingness to buy two seats, but only if they get STATUS miles for both. As has been pointed out, banked miles might be more doable than status miles, though airlines bless none of it.
