Christmas Thoughts
With Christmas only a few hours away, I just wanted to stop and wish you all a safe and happy holiday. I also ask that tomorrow when you're sharing lunch with your family and friends that you spare a thought, or say a prayer for the thousands of people who this year will have an empty place at their table, those who's loved ones never came home on that fateful day.
On September 11th, Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, Friends & Lovers went to work, or boarded flights believing that traffic & delays would be their biggest problem for on that day - sadly it wasn't to be. Instead they were to be victims of a most insidious plot - one that saw both planes and buildings fall, and not only a nation, but a planet was plunged into a nightmare we will never forget.
Yet even on a day filled with unspeakable acts of terror, there emerged stories of incredible acts of courage, of which America as a nation should be proud. Though it will bring little or no comfort for those left behind, we will never forget that lives were saved by the sacrifice of others.
First, those aboard UA93, who through their decision to try to retake the plane prevented it striking it's intended target. Although their actions resulted in their flight ending tragically in a field in Pennsylvania - they chose to risk their lives to prevent the deaths of countless strangers.
Likewise, the men and women of the NYPD, NYFD, and the Port Authority, who despite the risks, rushed into the twin towers to assist others to escape. Even after the loss of the 1st Tower, many of these men and women stayed in harms way inside the second tower - and by doing so, helped save people who would otherwise have lost their lives.
There are also the unsung heroes, security guards and office workers, who stayed inside the buildings to assist people to the exits, there were those that carried disabled and injured friends, (and strangers), down hundreds of steps, and those that chose to stay with friends who couldn't escape.their acts of courage and sacrifice will also be remembered.
May we all have the courage to make similar sacrifices if God forbid, we ever find ourselves in such a situation.
Sadly, only 2 months later, more seats at Christmas tables were vacated, with the tragic loss of AA58, their families too, remain in our thoughts this holiday season.
Spare a thought also, for those men and women who have been tasked with the job of clearing the debris, and recovering the remains of the victims. Also to the members of the armed forces of both America and her allies, who are spending Christmas away from home, on active duty.
Take the time, tomorrow to let your family and friends know how much they mean to you, break down the barricades that exist between you and estranged family and friends for you never know when they, or you will be issued with your final boarding pass (upgraded of course) to that great airport in the sky.
Let me finish, by saying that I am glad to be included in the company of such a fine group as FT, the kindness and support shown to fellow members during the difficult months just passed, has made me proud to be a member.
May your stockings be filled with miles and upgrades.
Keep safe, and Ill see you in the skies in 2002.
