Airlines Comping United 1P Status
Just made UA 1P - yes! Next question: which airlines comp this status to their own equivalent (50,000 mile) status? And to request the comp, is it typically sufficient to phone the main number of the miles program, or must a more targeted representation be made?
Thanks.........
Thanks.........

I have no experience in comping, but just from reading the numerous posts on this board, remember that if you do get comped on another airline it will be a one time deal. So say you get comped on AA, if you don't fly the required miles in 2003, you'll lose the status. In short, use the comps with care as they are usually only done on a one time basis.

Most airlines will comp you to the lower or mid level fairly easily if you provide evidence of your status and in some cases flying history. You should call the FF program(s) you are interested in and ask. If you want to preserve your supposedly one time comp (we've heard of it occurring more than once) consider asking for a challenge, at least on AA. (We've heard that is one time also but some have gotten a challenge more than once.) Downside of the challenge of course is the loss of bonus miles during the challenge.

Not only is it a 1-time offering, but you will lose it if you don't fly a sufficient amount next year.
Thus, and depending on how much you fly overall, you'll need to decide next year how committed you want to be to UA (to make 1P or even go for 1K) versus flying the miles with the carrier that comped you. If you don't do the 50K (or equivalent) next year on UA, you'll drop to 2P or general member and lose your 1P and *A Gold benefits.

colleague of mine who flies to TPE a lot (has gold CO status) finally had enough with NW. he told me that he called MP and asked for status. they told him that he would need to fax a copy of his most recent statement to a dedicated number at mileage plus. he was told that it would be reviewed, and he would be sent a response. it took about 3 weeks, but he did receive the equivilent level status with UA.
in all honesty, i bet the comps are a wash every year. for all the comps UA gives out in a given year, they probably loose as many to the other airlines doing the same thing. it's all about trying to get new high yield customers.

I was comp'd this year and I made PE status for 2002 on my own... it really does help... I honestly wouldn't think of flying another airline when trying to maintain those benefits when given to you... now I'm looking at another carrier due to some of the crap at United... I hope they're around in 2003!!!
