Ok, i tried to search the forums on what is exactally status is and how it works. I guess i don't really know what it is

Can someone explain it to me?

I think it's where you get free upgrades to 1st class and things like that

I guess I am just not use to it because i mainly fly Midwest Airlines and it's all one class and really nice. I look at the 1st class on AA and AS and thought it was kind of a joke compared to Midwest Airlines

Status is a group of benefits which an airline extends to its most frequent flyers. Each airline designs its own benefit packages. Upgrades are only one of those benefits. For example, I have mid-level status on American. In addition to some free upgrades, I get:
1. Business/First Class checkin.
2. In some airports, priority access to TSA screening.
3. Early boarding (helpful for stowing carryons).
4. Priority for standby.
5. Double the miles I would otherwise earn.
6. Free access to lounges when traveling internationally.
7. Ability to reserve preferred seating, such as exit row seating.
