Miles for Mortgages
Does anybody know how to rack up mileage while paying your monthly mortgage? As I understand it the federal 'Good Funds Law' has limited this discussion, but I read today even the IRS is know accepting visa/mc payments for your taxes - if you owe.

welcome to flyertalk!
you might want to investigate the following site:
http://www.payanythingonline.com
they purport that you can pay ANYTHING with your credit card online through them -- I HAVE NOT USED THEM, AND I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF THEIR FEE STRUCTURE.
see if their charge is reasonable for you.

If you can pay it somehow using an SPG-earning card, even 2.89% may be a good value in specific circumstances; for airline mileage earning cards the value gets a lot harder to justify at 2.89% (but there are circumstances where I'd consider it).

I am in the process of re-financing my home and one of the lenders I am shopping is HSBC. They tell me that they accept credit card payments over the phone and on-line without a surcharge. Sounds too good to be true. What do you think?

There's no such thing as free money--especially when banks are concerned. If they're accepting credit card payments with no fees they must be raising the mortgage rate or something.
All that said, if you find it works let us know...

When I had a mortgage (thank god I paid it off already), my local bank accepted payments via credit card in their offices and by phone. I don't know what card I used to put it to but probably something with mileage or points back.
That payanythingonline.com is not worth it, in my opinion. 2.89% and a $5 "convenience" fee. Wow! That's way too much, but I guess that is what is costs them to process the transaction.
I thought some online lending companies gave you miles per $10,000 in your mortgage. Ahh, there it is. Lending Tree offers you 1,250 miles per $10,000 financed and if you find a realtor with them you earn 3,000 miles per $10,000 of home purchase price or sale price. Fiquring a $400,000 loan on a $450,000 house that's 50,000 miles on a loan and 135,000 miles on the house, that's a hefty 185,000 miles right there! It looks as if they do this for Delta, Continental, United, and US Airways. That's pretty good if you choose to have brokers and mortgage companies competing for your business.
It looks as if Continental does this too via their Home Connections department which works out if you don't like Lending Tree.
I wish they had this back in the day when I financed my house, boy could I have gotten a lot of miles!
