Travelers Checks for Miles
Hey guys,
With recent threads of buying bonds for miles, can the same principle hold true for travelers checks from american express. I have a gold skymiles card and am going to Europe next month, and will be getting travelers checks anyway. Should I purchase them on the amex website with the $10 fee? Do I get the miles or do they treat it as a cash advance? Thanks for the info.

Rickdog99, One will not earn MR points when purchasing travelers checks from American Express. In addition to the $10.00 fee, you will also pay postage fees. From the Amex FAQ:
Can I earn Membership Rewards points when I purchase Travelers Cheques or Cheques for Two ?
No. Membership Rewards enrollees cannot earn Membership Rewards program points for Travelers Cheques or Cheques for Two purchases.
Amex does accept M/C and Visa for purchases of travelers checks, however, I am unaware if it is considered a cash advance or not. Since the limit is $1000 per online transaction, you would be paying $10 for 1000 miles/points.

Check the currencytogo.com threads (I think recently on spam). You can buy us travelers checks but they can only be purchased with MC or Visa - so if you have a mileage MC/Visa you can get miles, no fees and overnight delivery. Their web-site is down, but you call the number and tell them that you couldn't order them on-line you will get them fee free. You can order $1000 by telephone (for some quirky reason - only $950 on-line). You can do this 4 times within 12 months of your first order. This is offered by Chase bank in NY.

FWIW. If you have AAA and an AAA Visa/MC you can purchase TC with them and no fee. Using a different card the transaction is treated as a cash advance, but if you us a AAA sponsored card it is considered a purchase.
