Need NYC hotel reccomendation

I'm staying the weekend here in NJ and bringing the G/F up. I was thinking of staying in the city on Sat night. Any good hotel suggestions? All the Hiltons seem to be sold out. Looking for a nice room near the midtown/Central Park.

I just stayed at the Barbizon hotel last weekend, close to where you want to be. It's part of the small but growing Melrose Group.

Wow, what treat. Fresh flowers, marble bathrooms, *huge* private patio where we breakfasted in the AM and cocktailed in the PM. The rooms on the lower floors without patios are not as nice, though.

Ask for Esther Barbosa, Sr Sales Mgr. Maybe she can get you a deal for one of these somewhat expensive rooms.

Lots of the park will be closed off for the Marathon, so if you were planning on all day Sunday in the park or something you may consider something else. Give the hotels a call directly (not the 800 number), they are probably getting some cancelations.

Stayed at the Mayflower last year.Very comfortable, not too fancy. Our "suite" had a good view of the park and the hotel is right next to a Trump Hotel. I'd stay there again.

Both the Empire and the Mayflower are within an easy walk of Lincoln Ctr. The Empire is directly across the street. I stay at the Empire 2-3 times a year. It's seen better days, as has the Mayflower, but if you're an opera fan, the location is optimal.

I have always had a very nice experience at the Hilton Times Square. Great location on 42nd street.

FlyinMike, here's another option for you...

From Frommer's Travel Newsletter
We constantly receive letters from would-be visitors to New York City, imploring us to name hotels where they can rent a room for under $100 a night. There are such places, but their vacancies are few, and a better course is to seek out one of the many companies that provide you with fully furnished studio apartments in New York City. One such firm is called A Hospitality Company--that's three words, "A Hospitality Company"--and it actually owns some 250 apartments in the City, which means that no one lives in them when tourists aren't around. The price starts at just $99 a night, and you get nicer arrangements than you'd receive in a hotel. Call A Hospitality Company at 800/987-1235 or, from New York, call 212/965-1102.

I'm going to be in NY this weekend too and see some decent places on Expedia/Travelocity for $150 or so. What could I get on Priceline for a $125-$150 bid? Anyone have any experience w/Priceline for NY hotel rooms? Any particluar hotels it tends to direct you to? Thanks for the help!

NY is always great if you are bringing your girlfriend. Depending on your budget, you might look at the Waldorf Astoria or Waldorf Towers(same building/Towers rooms much bigger, fancier), the rooms can be as affordable as $169 and go up. Good thing there is location and they will often upgrade you. I highly reccomend the concierge levels if you can -- in the end you save money in that they always have good food in the lounge. I have had good luck finding deals at the Waldorfs via Expedia and Travelocity. I would avoid Priceline at all costs.

Also very nice is the Carlyle on the upper east side and any of the Ws if you go for the more modern hip thing.

I definitely recommend using Priceline. I got a room at the W Hotel on Lexington Avenue for next weekend for $95 a night. You can't go wrong if you only bid on 4* hotels in the midtown east, west, or south zones. Other 4*s that have come up lately include the Waldorf Astoria, Hilton New York and Towers, Sheraton New York and Towers, Intercontinental, and the Drake Swissotel.

Check out biddingfortravel.com for recent successful bids and a link for $5 in bonus money.

The "Miles Buzz" board is not intended for these types of postings. Please utilize the FT Travel Board in the future, and post under the New York sub-board. Activity on FT Travel has increased significantly in the last two months, and a new posting such as this would get plenty of attention.

Called the Barbizon and the Waldorf and checked on-line at various sites. They had no rooms for less than $300 that had a king bed, so I went on Priceline and got one at the Swisshotel Drake for $150 (only a few $$ cheaper than the expedia rate for that hotel).

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I'll be sure to post these kind of questions in the other forum in the future.

Craig6z,

As an aside, and with all deference, given that there has not been a single posting under the NYC board since 10-23-2001 at 10:43 AM, FlyinMike may actually not find out nearly much over there.

The New York City topic at Sheryl's Priceline board is showing some action for this weekend. Looks like one dude got a 3* place for around $75 per night for the entire weekend.
