PHL To/From EWR Flights Are Gone

I received a taped call stating an upcoming flight on CO has been revised. Upon calling I learned all the CO flights PHL to/from EWR have been cancelled as of yesterday. After 20 min I was rerouted to the desired HNL but via IAH. She thought US was still flying a few though but she could not access them. This was a nice easy way to get 500 easy ff miles and really cheap easy car parking at PHL vs the EWR mess.

Better check if you have any flights scheduled.

revised to have this make some sense.

Do I understand you correctly? They routed you PHL-IAH-EWR? It seems to me that has to be illegal! Ah well.

Anyway, I think you should expect more of these moves - with new airport security, not to mention general flying fears in the public, Amtrak is looking real attractive in the Boston-Washington corridor.

It sounds like he was originally flying PHL-EWR-HNL and has been rerouted PHL-IAH-HNL.

Okay, I admit it, something doesn't make sense to me either.

If it was just an issue of flying PHL-XXX-HNL and all that changed was the connecting airport, why the talk about parking at EWR?

Yonatan

PS maybe this is a sign I shouldn't attempt any more 10-hour marathon note-taking sessions...

Yonatan,

He probably lives somewhere between EWR & PHL (or similar distance to both), and has the choice of which airport to take.

In the course of rationalizing route structures and introducing operational economies, cancellation by some carriers of ultra-short routes like PHL-EWR would only be natural. The distance is so short that the costs entailed in dollars, energy, personnel and time could be deployed better elsewhere in the system. Sorry you will be losing out on an easy 500-mile segment, butPHL-NYC is a natural for high speed rail, not airlines. Maybe we in NAmerica will start to learn from the Europeans about making use of the appropriate forms of transportation. I for one applaud CO for eliminating such a wasteful route.

Some really good detectives read this FT board (and this poor writer too)

(1) you gotta the first and second HNL routings correct

(2) you gotta the time to drive to PHL or EWR correct

(3) PHL parking is $6/day and typically 15 min from park to airport, EWR is $12-$20/day and 30 min to airport

(4) I far preferred the nice CO 500 ff miles to the extra cost and extra time needed to take the train. The time cost is over a hour or two (regular Amtrak vs Metroliner/Acela and the extra train ticket cost is about $80-$150 RT with not-very-secure parking at the Philly train station for $12-$20/day.

All this crap plus the extra labor of lugging of luggage and two trains/busses to catch. And lastly, very often the CO fare was cheaper starting from Philly than from Newark. I guess I will be using ABE (Allentown) more and more if I fly CO.

There are plenty of off-airport places to park your car near EWR for $10/day...and they shuttle you in...only taking 10 minutes or so....if there's a lot of traffic...have them drop you at the Monorail station and shoot in from there....it's not that difficult....I vote for eliminating that EWR-PHL route too....a true waste.

You can also take the Amtrak train directly to the NEW Amtrak terminal at EWR (which incidently is a great way to get to Penn Station if you are going to Manhattan). Amtrak also has a convenient station at Baltimore (BWI).

When you factor in the inconvenience of waiting for flights and connections, it is often times faster to go by train.
