Interim measures - Postal Svc./FedEx? Cargo flights?

In a twisted amount of travel related irony, my Express-mailed-Monday passport and visa application to a Washington DC foreign embassy still hasn't left the Boston PO. so any idea to fly next week may be neither the FAA or my personal choice. Not to imply ANY "woe-is-me" but at least if cargo (I'm just talking small stuff.) could move around, we could manage with phone calls, etc. Without UPS/FedEx etal, I am just whittling away the day in front of the PC.

I have heard nothing regarding allowing Cargo flights back into the air. I would think that at least something such as FedEx and US Mail would/should be tougher to hijack (no passengers) and the upcoming security add-ons will be all about inspecting bags and ID's etc, not really cargo oriented.

Anyone have any Cargo/Postal info?

My sister's documents for residency match program (US Medical Student) are also sitting in the local Airborne office. They let me know that flights had been cancelled again today due to "bomb" threats in California, but I am seeing 6 pm ET being mentioned on the net as a possible time for resumption of flights.

We just received word at our office that FedEx will not be making any pick-ups or deliveries at our office. FedEx Ground is not guaranteed for the next 24 hours. We were told we can try to send things via UPS Ground but they are suggesting we hold off deliveries until FedEx and UPS resume normal operations as they are currently swamped with people changing the service on existing shipments to have them go ground.

Yup,
I'm waiting for paperwork for my mortgage refinance, from the mortgage company in south carolina to the title company in san diego to
me in seattle. Its all gotta be federal express and it just isn't happening.

Hope it happens before Monday.

Then again, its just money and what is that without your safety.

Although the USPS website doesn't say it, be prepared for some possibly significant delays in first class mail service. Currently, most 1st class mail that is going >1,000 miles usually moves by air. I would expect coast to coast 1st class mail to take 7-10 days or more at this point (until things are back to what passes for 'normal').

Well my express mail did arrive just moments ago. So Boston-Washington DC data point - 68 hours. ..and I am fine with it.

Then again, still I have wondered why the news is so shallow in interpreting. Even the talking head say nothing of cargo, a lot of the air traffic in the world is just that, cargo. Unless there are travel measures that the news is just not reporting becuase it doesn't apply to passanger air travel, all the changes seem to be related to that, and air cargo will be the same, so why not have them flying right now?

I called Fed-ex to deal with a shipment and offered my condolances for any of their people lost in the WTC. At 9:00am there has to be a dozen couriers and several trucks in that building complex.

Much to my surprise and delight, the operator said all their people got out.

I see FDX and ABX flights swarming the air right now. A bit of UPS.
