AwardGuard

For those of us who still have AwardGuard having continually subscribed before 2003, is there value of having AwardGuard beyond about 150K miles? As I understand it you gave $7500 worth of tickets if the program is terminated. Does that mean that with, say United, I could get a First Class ticket to Asia which would cost roughly $7500 or do I have to find some other award on a program I DON'T belong to?
I'm a little confused.

It's really not about what you think the retail for an award might be, that restriction in place by the provider at the time was our internal replacement costs so depending on how we were able to replace an award, it might cover hundreds of thousands of miles, not 150,000. I know years ago when we protected millions and millions of expiring American and United miles that we were very good at placing members on tickets bought from consolidators as well as replacement awards in other currencies. We've always been encouraged to do the best we can for our members which is why after 14 years of the program and literally millions and millions of dollars replacement awards (especially in the expiring miles days which most members here won't recall) you really won't find any of the sort of complaints that frequent most other programs.

I'm not sure from your question is if all you have are United miles. I know it may sound strange, but you can check out my past editorials and advice, I have always advised that i thought United miles were safe from any bankruptcy problems stemming from 9/11 and it looks like that advice is proving out. Now, if you follow my advice, please feel free to lapse your AwardGuard membership. There's certainly things I don't know about in the future and AwardGuard is there really for peace-of-mind.

I'm thinking that we could probably do up to 750,000 miles per year with the current restrictions on AwardGuard limits. Limits again that we don't choose. In any case, we'd tell you up front when rebooking that award if there was any problems with your limits not yet used up. So again, please don't think of the limits from your retail airfare point-of-view.
